Well this was a surprise. TechCrunch is reporting that Boxee, the set-top box hardware and software developer has been bought out by none other than Samsung. Israeli media is pegging the deal at $30 million dollars. Boxee's latest release was a set-top Cloud DVR box, a subscription-based device that let users save shows to unlimited cloud storage on Boxee's servers. Service was limited to only a dozen markets, and the $100 box wasn't well reviewed at launch. Samsung could be buying Boxee to integrate that Cloud DVR functionality or Boxee's speedy interface in future Samsung Smart TVs. Either way, it's a relatively cheap move for Samsung, who has been pushing its Smart TV agenda for the past two years.
