Boeing Converts F-16 into Unmanned Aerial Target
In cooperation with the US Air Force, Boeing has retrofitted an old F-16 fighter jet into an unmanned drone, and recently conducted its first test flight. The plane, which has been out of service for 15 years, was outfitted with new flight control technology to be piloted remotely by two test pilots at a ground control station nearby at the Florida base. The unmanned plane was able to take off, reach supersonic speeds, perform barrel rolls and other maneuvers, and then land without a hitch. The USAF plans to use this plane, and five others like it, for future aerial training for its pilots, including live weapons testing.
