DARPA and UPenn's Robot Boats Rescue ExperimentBy Norman Chan To prepare for future maritime disasters, like oil rig fires, DARPA has been experimenting with turning shipping containers into smart robots that can transform into floating platforms during crisis. The imitative is is being researched through DARPA's Tactically Expandable Maritime Platform program, in conjunction with researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. Says UPenn: "This is a simulation, showing possible uses for these robotic boats. The first question is, why not have the quadrotor lift the patient over the water? In the real world, that's probably the easiest solution, but here we wanted to demo the boats."
