How To Install Ubuntu on a Netbook

By Will Greenwald

Now that you have a Ubuntu on a USB key, it's time to get it into a netbook.

Select “Default” as the install option and hit enter. The netbook will start loading Ubuntu from the USB key. Note: your trackpad might not work at this point, so keep a mouse on-hand. Click on “Favorites” and then click on “Install Ubuntu-Netbook-Remix 9.10.” The installer will load.

Steps 1-3 are basic: language, time zone, and keyboard layout.

Step 4 is the disk partition tool. Select “Erase and use the entire disk” to wipe the netbook’s drive and install Linux on it.

In step 5, enter the computer’s name, your username, and your password.

Finally, step 6 lets you review the installation options before it starts. If everything’s in order, click “Install” and the program will do the rest.

When it’s done, unplug the USB key and reboot the netbook. It's really that simple. You’re now a Linux user! And for all you existing Linux users out there, what are some of the essential open source apps that you use?
