Elon Musks' Vision for Interactive 3D Design
It's common knowledge that director Jon Favreau modeled his interpretation of Marvel's Tony Stark after Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Musk has now in turn taken some inspiration from Favreau's Iron Man movies with the development of 3D design interface tools, much like the CG holographic interface used by Robert Downey Jr. in the first two Iron Man movies. (Fun fact: those CG bits were added in the script after Downey improvised those motion gestures during filming.) In this video, which Musk teased with Favreau over Twitter last week, SpaceX demos some combinations of consumer hardware--including the Leap Motion and Oculus Rift--to manipulate 3D models in a virtual space. It's more a demo of CAD visualization than actual design, but the point is that consumer tech is powerful enough for developers to start experimenting with new interface modalities with earnest. Now let's hope Must and his team will make this software open to the public for consumers to test.
