Tesla Battery Pack Swaps in 90 Seconds
At a special event in Tesla Motors' Los Angeles Design Studio, Elon Musk demonstrated the company's new Fast Battery Swap technology on stage, comparing it to a video of an Audi filling up a 20-gallon gas tank at a convention gas station. The Tesla Model S battery swap, shown twice, took under 100 seconds each time, compared to the roughly four-minutes for the Audi to refuel. Tesla plans to install these $500,000 battery swap rigs at its current network of charging stations. Model S owners will be charged $60-$80 for these fast swaps, compared to the free charge at the current stations (which take 30 minutes for a 200-mile charge). Not all electric car enthusiasts are happy about this proprietary technology, though.
