You think your office is bad? Try working 230 feet below the surface of the Earth. That’s where the approximately 600 employees of the Office of Personnel Management in Boyers, PA labor. The office is responsible for processing the retirement benefits for all Federal government workers, which doesn’t seem to be a high-stakes mission. But their operations aren’t underground for security reasons. The office needs to be inside an abandoned limestone mine because it’s the only affordable facility big enough to house the 28,000 file cabinets that keep all of the records. No, the data isn’t kept in any kind of digital format, but hopefully one day it will be.
