To commemorate the 51st anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's historic flight into space to become the first human to orbit the Earth, Alex Rivest stitched together NASA's publicly available photos from the International Space Station into this time-lapse video. Other celebratory tributes were held at parties all around the world on April 12th, dubbed "Yuri's Night".
It's amazing to realize that anyone with an internet connection can download entire libraries of high-resolution photographs that astronauts (in this case, Don Pettit) take from space, and not just a select few photos that have been filtered by press relations. NASA even has a clickable map for you to check if there are photos of specific cities and regions around the world.
