First Footage from James Cameron's Challenger Deep Dive

By Norman Chan

The first public glimpses of the very bottom of the ocean. It's almost alien.

National Geographic has released the first of many videos documenting director James Cameron's historic Mariana Trench Dive. The video is light on ocean floor footage--which presumably will be released later after scientists study it--but offers some insights into what it was like during that three hour journey.

The coolest revelation: Cameron's DeepSea Challenger sub actually compresses by three-inches during the dive, due to the intense water pressure. Watch the video here.
