  • @FakePlasticTree: Yeah, fair point. It's pretty tough to brick an iPhone, and if you're on 3.1.3 already, you're not going to lose much.   Interesting to see that there are actually 3.1.3 jailbreaks around (redsn0w) - I  had thought they were still being worked on - probably getting myself confused with unlocks.   The only jailbreak app other than the carrier unlock I use frequently is SBSettings - allows me to quickly toggle things like ...

  • @lane: H.264 is an open standard, just patent encumbered so requires a license from MPEG LA to redistribute. I think if anything, Apple are major advocates of an open video standard.  The Quicktime format is just a container format, nothing to do with how a video is actually encoded (they seem to push the use of H.264 for encoding Quicktime contained videos), it's used by Apple because its relatively good for storing ...

  • @lane: I realise flash on Android is happening (as I'm fairly sure Steve Jobs is...), the question being raised is how well it will perform. Hopefully, it'll be great, and we can all experience Flash on our Android phones.  As for Steve Jobs (Apple?) pushing for openness; as mentioned in the letter, Apple did create the WebKit project, as well as being major contributors to open web standards such as HTML5. Sure, ...

  • Apple just released this letter from Steve Jobs on their stance towards Flash and Apple.  A few interesting outtakes:  On Flash on mobile devicesIn addition, Flash has not performed well on mobile devices. We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in ...

  • Regardless of how you interpret this letter; if anyone can phase out dated technology, Apple can.  I can't wait to see Flash fade away myself - it's been going for the past 10-15 years: First, we stopped using it for flash intros. Nobody liked those things. Then, we stopped using it for important navigation elements (This Jakob Nielsen article from 2000 sums that up well). No one uses it for layout/interactivity anymore. (Except for ...

  • No. Wait for something that's tested and approved by either geohot or the iPhone Dev Team otherwise you'll risk buggering up your phone. Better safe than sorry, and you're not missing out on much.

  • @ethan: That suits me, if you'd be willing to add it to your todo list.

  • @ethan: Thanks for the update Ethan, that sounds great! I do a lot of moderation stuff over on Giant Bomb, so being able to do it from my iPad (when I get one...) would be fantastic.  Any chance we could have access to the code view too? It would be really handy for times when the editor goes nuts, although I can understand the reluctance to make it available to normal users.

  • @TheAdmin: In the editor (where you normally write your replies/topics), the button on the far right in the toolbar says 'insert' with a down arrow next to it. If you click this, then the HTML option, you can enter the text in there.

  • I got my AeroProess the other day based on Will's recommendation; really loving it so far. I tend to only use a single scoop for my coffees, unless I want something a lot stronger.

  • @will: Unfortunately us peasants don't get code view. Great to hear a fix is on the way though!

  • Looks like those of us interested in the iPad outside of the US are going to have to face yet more agonisingly long days before we get our hands on an iPad. Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May ...

  • Hm, international customers have to wait longer for an iPad and pay more for an iPad... I would hate to be an international Apple fan.

@FakePlasticTree: Fair enough - I tend not to take all of music with me, I'll usually just put a bunch of podcasts a few albums and a couple of films on my iPhone before I travel, and that's enough for me - can certainly see why larger sizes work for you though.

Is there an app that lets you blue tooth photos via iPhone? Yes, something like Bluetooth Photo Share should be OK.  Is there a 32GB version available in UK?   Yep, only the iPhone 3GS though, there is no 32GB model of the 3G. Are they worth it? Re 32GB of storage; no, not really - 8GB has been perfect for me, but if you imagine yourself using more 16GB will probably be sufficient. Re iPhones ...

Love Virgin America! Lots of leg room, BBTV on the seatback, and my bag was waiting when I got to baggage claim. Awesome.

Showered and somewhat refreshed. Best part of last night was meeting everyone who took the trip to SF. Sorry I was so dreary eyed.

I'm glad I took a break from the big ass live show on GB to go to the pub quiz. Won it and left the pub with more money than I went in with.
