General Discussion » Reviewing/quicklooking UI for websites

This might make for decent premium content fodder. It's not something I can justify as a regular feature, but certainly fits in the the behind the scene type stuff that peeps might be interested in.

Phones » Guide to the Best Twitter App for Android

The scrollable widget for Plume is the biggest selling point. Since I'm in there 90% of the time and not in the main app, the coloring problems don't bother me as much. I switch the theme to the light version and up the font size (which are both available) and it's perfectly workable in those rare times where I want to check tweets past the last 100 or run a search.

@pavakah: This image is so good I'm giving fair warning that I'm likely going to steal it for our corporate site. Nice shot!

PC and Mac » Question about sound cards.

If you're a musician or audiophile you might want to look into a fully dedicated DAC. I've got a Meier Audio DAC/Amp combo that I use with headphones. The big reason I love it outside of the sound is that I can move it between systems whenever I want because it works through USB and overtakes the sound for the whole system.

General Discussion » Mobile-access to sites is now a premium feature?

@lane: Oh don't worry. I never take stuff that way. I'm glad people ask these questions to be honest. Most of the time everyone is pretty rational. Collectively, conversations with our members leave an imprint and its how we make decisions.

General Discussion » Mobile-access to sites is now a premium feature?

Ignoring the cross-post incendiary nature of this topic.

First, we're not Hulu. We don't distribute others content, we create it ourselves and there's a cost to that. We also have an engineering team that just recently enjoyed getting a one-to-one equality with the number of sites we run. That you actually compare us to a company with the resources of Hulu makes me feel pretty good about myself!

Now, why charge for mobile? Why not make it free. It's pretty simple for us. Running a mobile site means we are no longer supporting 5 websites, but now 10. Lane, there is no artificial limitation in this project. The limitation for us is the time we have to devote to it and support. As you'd imagine supporting our sites better on mobile is usually one of the first things that came up in the request queue. The other was single sign-on. SIngle sign-on though is a one time cost for us. We hustle for 2 months and get it done and then hopefully it just works (which is why it's going to be free). Mobile though is quite a different story. Now when we launch new features on the site we also have to reskin that feature for mobile. So not only are we now worried about a maintenance cost, we're now also signing up for doubling our front-end (design and production) work for every new thing we do. That's a lot of time. It's also why only HUGE companies do mobile well.

We absolutely would not have started a mobile site of this scale (actually, we might have done some cheap-o text link version) if we weren't doing paid memberships. It's not like something we had on the roadmap and said, oh we might as well put that behind the wall, it was more... ok, our users want a better experience, how can we justify spending the time on it vs. concentrating on our main product (mobile, while growing is a very small fraction of our audience)?  Remember too, that the site you see right now will exist for free accounts on your mobile devices. We're just offering a premium, supported version if you pay.

In the end my transparency on this subject is really just to fulfill any curiosities. We as a company believe in being open and honest with our business, which funnily enough is how our writers feel about their editorial. In the end I think people will choose to support us because they like and understand that mission, not because they'll get a T-Shirt (though we're going give you one of those too!).

And hey, this is all optional. If it's not a good deal to you, fair enough. A lot of us spend our days trying to inform people about making value decisions, we get it.

General Discussion » Whiskey Media Mobile Preview

I posted this up over on Giant Bomb, but I figured all you tech nerds would appreciate our new mobile stuff.

Continuing my preview of Whiskey Media's upcoming paid account service, here's a look at the new mobile version of the site that gpbmike is working on.  Obviously it's quite better than the current iphone app (which is now free btw) that we launched over a year ago. Here's some bullet points.

  1. All of the Whiskey Media sites are getting this skin.
  2. It will work on any phone that has a browser that allows for javascript (Android, iPhone ... etc).
  3. If you're a paid member, you'll just login and it should just work.
  4. Although we forgot to show it, profiles and activity feeds will be fully functional.
  5. The regular site will still be viewable from mobile phones in an AS IS capacity if you decide not to upgrade.
  6. Going forward the engineering team will continually update this mobile site as we add new features to the live site. We don't want to dig another hole like the iPhone app where we were continually at Apple's mercy when it came to getting new features approved (the original app took 3 trys over an entire month!).

As mentioned, this stuff is coming out the door in September! Apologizes for the crappy video but as you can see we are simply humble, nerdy developers.

General Discussion » Recommended pc tower cases?

Alright, well I'm putting together a new PC and decided this time to not skimp out on a case. I've had a decent Antec case for a couple years, but after seeing video cards only get bigger I've decided to just fuck the space-saving and go with the luxury of a full tower. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Right now I'm leaning toward the CoolerMaster Cosmos Pure Black full tower. A little pricey, but the sound dampening looks pretty sweet. Also dig the handles. Let it be said that I am in no way interested in modded cases and am just looking for something that's easy to work with and has plenty of room.

General Discussion » New footer across Whiskey Media Sites

@Rallier: You probably just had the old css for a second.

@LordAndrew: Every single page, or every single site? Definitely shouldn't have to do it for every single page.
