Phones » Unlocked Galaxy nexus on AT&T 3g?

@Vash108: The international HSPA+ version is pentaband 3G, so it should work just fine. However, it will only be able to access AT&T's regular 3G APNs, not the "4G" ones. As a result, you will top out at about 1.5Mbps down. If you've had an AT&T HSPA+ phone before, your account should already allow access to the HSPA+ APNs. More info.

Phones » Performance of T-Mobile phones on AT&T?

@nickb64: That's the international one. The Tmo version is the one Falcon was talking about getting. It has AWS (1700/2100). AnandTech says the Tmo version actually has 850 and 1900 too. Not just 850. http://www.anandtech.com/show/5284/nokia-lumia-710-review-tmobile-nokia-wp7/7

Phones » Performance of T-Mobile phones on AT&T?

@Falcon: It will work as long as you can get it unlocked. The AWS is Tmo, obviously, but that 850 UMTS band is AT&T. It lacks AT&T's other 3G band, which is 1900, but the one should be fine in most areas. Presumably T-Mobile will sell it locked, but a third party may sell you the Tmo edition unlocked. Similarly, Tmo should be nice enough to unlock it if you buy it at full price. Or... buy an unlock code online.

Also, you might have some issues getting on AT&T's good APNs. Not sure if your Focus is provisioned for the HSPA+ stuff. Turns out AT&T is kind of dickish about unlocked phones. See here for more on that: http://www.theverge.com/2011/12/17/2643695/the-high-speed-network-at-t-is-keeping-to-itself-and-what-to-do-about

Phones » Nexus S vs Galaxy Nexus

@Jayross: Wind uses AWS 3G like T-Mobile in the states, right? I imagine they will sell the version with just European and AWS 3G. I don't think there is a pentaband version of that phone. It's either AWS or 850/1900. Are there other AWS carriers up there? I though it was just Wind.

Phones » Question regarding unlocked phones

@ToastMan: Tmo is under no obligation to unlock the phone. You can ask, and hopefully they will do it if you buy it at full price. Although, Tmo has some ridiculous plans right now. If you pay full price, the service still comes with a 2-year contract. If they won't unlock it, you can often find a hack in the community, or just buy an unlock code that you input when you put in a foreign SIM.

@ToastMan said:

My network uses 900/1800/2100 for GSM. I'm not sure what it means for 3g...

Where are you from, and what carrier? Most carriers list GSM (meaning 2G) separately from HSPA (3G). The Tmo GSII is 1700/2100 for 3G. If 2100 is one of your carrier's 3G bands and not just 2G, it will work after you have unlocked it, assuming you can.

Phones » Live Wallpapers: Good or Bad (w/ specifics)

@nweasel: I am still using the Mystic Halo LWP from the article. The dev has also updated with some new features since I wrote about it. Still love it. The info here about live wallpapers not using battery in the background is accurate. The ones that chew through battery are mostly ones that have to render complex graphics. These usually look great, but in addition to going through ~10% of your battery, they will slow the home screen down on all but the fastest devices.

Her lawyers are going crazy rabid all over the internet threatening websites that have links to or have postings of those photos right now.

Apparently Ms. Johansson has never heard of The Streisand Effect.

Phones » Adding podcasts like ios used too in android

@CoverlessTech: @super2j: I second DoggCatcher. Works wonderfully. Pocket Casts is also a good app, and some people love Beyond Pod (not me though). Then there is always Google Listen, which should already be on your phone, I think.

Phones » Thunderbolt worth keeping when service is stopped?

Imagine how you would use a Wi-Fi only tablet, then imagine that it is much smaller. That is what a phone without service is like. Browse the web, run apps, listen to audio. That's about it. If you fancy a hobby, running custom ROMs on it could be a lark.

Phones » Should I still get a Nexus S?

I love my Nexus S, but I wouldn't buy one now. Why would you not wait for the next Nexus? I guess I don't understand your objection to that.

Phones » Question about phones and plans

@Glouch: Yes. Mainly because I use Nexus phones and I have a grandfathered T-Mobile plan that is cheaper if I don't take a subsidy. I would not be opposed to a contract in the future, but I would have to be comfortable with paying the ETF if need be. Depending on the cost of the phone, you might still come out ahead.

Phones » Question about phones and plans

Don't know how much the S2 will be yet, but usually when you add a line and switch to a family plan, the new line is on a 2 year deal. That should entitle you to the subsidized price, whatever that is. Keep in mind that I could be wrong. I have not been under contract with my phones for a few years.

Phones » New Android starter kit (apps)

@m1ndtr1p: Autokiller is vastly different than a standard task killer like ATK or TasKiller. It is just tweaking memory management at the system level, which is why it needs root. Obviously if you have 1GB of RAM, you won't need to bother. Even if you don't, it isn't necessary. That's why it's #23. Autokiller was more useful on Froyo because garbage collection was done in big chunks that could lag the phone. Not as important in Gingerbread, but it is still fine to do. It is manual task killing that is unneeded.

Phones » New Android starter kit (apps)

@m1ndtr1p

I'm a bit confused here. I never have recommended task killers. In fact, I have written several articles about how you should not use them. I also point out in the article posted that you should be careful setting essential apps to update automatically.

Similarly, I mention that widgets won't run from the SD card. Performance should not be a problem though. Important cache and data remains on the internal flash storage.

Phones » Looping Boot Screen Evo 4g

Swing by the Sprint store and have a chat with them. The phone has a one year warranty, so depending on when you bought it, you may be able to get it replaced straight away. if not, you can probably argue with them a bit until they help you out in some way. I assume the way you restored it was by using recovery mode? If so, there's not much you can do. If Sprint won't help, you can try rooting and installing a custom ROM and Recovery. But if it won't stay running, I'm not sure if you can successfully root it. I don't know how EVO roots are currently done. Even then, I'm not sure it will fix anything.

General Discussion » Tech That You Won't Let Go

I have a WRT54G router from about 2004-2005 that I still use. It is a little temperamental, but I can't be bothered to replace it right now. I only use it for laptops and phones. My main rig is connected with ethernet.
