Newten (Level 1)

So I finished Gears 3 yesterday and realised that it's literally the first video game series I've played to a conclusion. Feels super weird.

Off-Topic » Important news for all the Whiskey Media "bronies" out there

Come on, I know you're lurking around My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fans. You're everywhere.

And if you're not an FiM fan, what are you doing in this thread? Get outta here!

For too long, we have had no outlet within the entire Whiskey Media network to discuss ponies. That changes now. Starting this week (though arguably last week, the first article is a little late) I'll be covering the show for Anime Vice, giving you an "official" place to get your fill of pony-talk with your Whiskey Media buddies. "But Newten!" you say; "Friendship is Magic ain't no anime, son!" True, I can't argue with that. However, considering the fact that the crazy internet fan base for the show and the target demographic for the Whiskey Media sites are remarkably similar, I suggested the idea to staff. Ethan liked the idea and gave me the green light.

The first article is up and you can follow the new Anime Vice community twitter feed to keep track of all the articles that hit the homepage. Hope to see you in the comments.

PC and Mac » How many monitors do you use?

I'm currently using one screen but I imagine when I eventually get a bigger monitor I'll use my current one as a secondary screen. I use the same monitor for my PC and 360 so it would be nice to be able to still have access to my PC while I'm on my 360, so I can have guides, lists of achievements, messenger and stuff running.

So yes, one right now, most likely two in the future.

This.
The novelty of ringtones wore off on me, and nearly everyone I know. Also, if my phone goes off when I don't want it to, vibrating is more discrete, everyone will instantly look at you if a ringtone goes off.

Rip and Stream » What do you use your CD-RWs for?

I hardly ever use CDs or DVDs, but the most recent things I did with CDs was burn some dreamcast games (since you don't need to modify your console to play backups) and I tried burning some lossless music I downloaded, just for the hell of it.
The last thing I used a DVD for was burning a copy of Windows 7, very handy to have a copy or two of that lying around.

Seriously. What the fuck is wrong with that dude? "
I don't know but he's been banned on Giant Bomb and if he hasn't been already, he's in the process of being banned here. I'd ban him on anime vice too but I checked and he's not on there, slightly disappointing.

PC and Mac » Just got a SSD!

Does it have a considerable impact on game benchmark scores? Say if you ran Crysis on the Velociraptor HD and then tried it on the SSD? Just curious.
I'm still quite amazed at solid state drives, they're mad stupid fast.

General Discussion » Portable Apps

@TheBeast: Where did you get portable handbrake? Or can you just copy it from a PC it's installed from? It would be amazingly handy if I could rip DVDs on a college computer so I don't have to take them home with me.

General Discussion » Portable Apps

@Addfwyn said:

" Not sure I quite follow what you mean by portable apps?  Do you mean just copies of an app you are keeping on a USB keychain or something?  Or a portable device actually running the app, like a smartphone of some variety. "

Copies of apps on a memory stick that will run on any PC.

@lane said:

" I haven't jumped on the "portable apps for everything!" bandwagon yet. I can see the advantages I guess, but nine times out of ten apps will dump all the user data in their profile anyway, so copy/pasting your home directory vs. copy/pasting your portable apps directory sounds like six of one, half a dozen of the other to me. Then, on top of that, you lose certain features, like shell integration and multi-user execution (or even multi-user access to one user's data, since profiles fall by the wayside). Just sounds like a hassle to me.  There are a few nice portable apps I use, though. I keep the portable version of File Hippo Update Checker on my USB key, which is handy when updating a system image or visiting a relative. PuTTY and WinSCP don't really have any business being anything but portable, and the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder has saved my life more than a few times. "

That sounds fair enough to me. I don't have the user problem since I'm the only person who uses my PC. Anything I want with shell integration I'll install. I agree lost of applications don't work as portable apps really, that's why I was curious what portable apps people do use. Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder? That sounds interesting...

Portable Firefox is what appeals to me the most so far. Firefox I can use on any computer, with all my addons, themes and bookmarks with it, very handy I think.

I use Spotify and then Windows Media Player when I have to download something because it's not on Spotify.

General Discussion » Portable Apps

I'm in the process of giving my PC a refresh, backing up, formatting and whacking on a fresh installation of Windows 7. For various reasons including not needing to install and being about to take them anywhere (college comes to mind) I've decided to get some portable versions of applications.
So far I have Firefox (set up with addons, themes and all that jazz) and Photoshop.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks of portable apps, if you use them, what do you use? Know any particularly good ones?

I'd almost get portable versions of everything if I could. But there can be advantages to actually installing things of course.
