General Discussion » Nice to see the tested site get the new layout treatment!!

Needs more shiny chrome-embossed buttons and wood paneling. But seriously, I like it a lot. It's about time Tested got the Whiskey redesign. I think even Animevice had it before them. Animevice!

General Discussion » Does download.com have a negative stigma?

I've always liked Download.com. They have a pretty big selection of software and they don't have any wait times or throttling (that I've noticed). Recently I've found that the Download.com Blog is a decent replacement for DownloadSquad since it got taken down. Usually if I'm looking for a specific piece of software I just Google it, go to the official site, and just let them choose where to send me. I always figure I'll get the latest version direct from the source. But getting back on topic, when I do use Download.com, I've never had a problem with them and the way they run their site.

General Discussion » Best Firefox Add-Ons

Read it Later (save pages to a list so you can read them later)
Speed Dial (set the new tab/home page to a grid of bookmarks of your choosing)
Personal Menu (add/remove options from the Firefox button/menu bar that I never use. Web developer menu, send link, etc.)
Menu Editor (remove options from context menu/menu bar, but no Firefox button support AFAIK. I use this solely for consolidating Firefox's enormous context menu.)
PriceBlink (compare prices of the current item of the site you're on with other retailers)
Lazarus (backs up anything you type into forms/text boxes in case of browser/computer crash/etc.)

General Discussion » Did my firefox install mess up?

Holy shit that is a lot of toolbar buttons. Was that intentional? As for the Firefox button, you can also get it back by right clicking on the toolbar and unchecking menu bar. But unless you dragged all those toolbar buttons there yourself something fucked up. You should be able to fix it by right clicking on the toolbar, clicking customize, and then dragging all the buttons where you want them. If that doesn't work then I would recommend a clean install.

Please Help! » Weird problems with Chrome

Could it be an extension causing the problem? By default they're disabled in Incognito mode, so if it works fine there that would be my first guess.

Please Help! » TV Purchasing Advice (pt. II)

I agree that the information that's out there is very inconsistent. No one seems to agree on anything, so it's hard to tell what's true and what isn't. All I can really give you is my personal experience based on the two LCD TVs we have in the house. They're both 60Hz (32" Sony Bravia EX400 and 26" Samsung 450 Series) and I don't notice any motion blur that isn't in the video itself. Given all the hoopla surrounding motion blur on LCDs I expected to at least see some motion blur. But I don't see it at all. If it were me, I would go for the bigger 60Hz model, but your mileage may vary.

General Discussion » Tell us your sound system and rate it on a scale from 1 to 5

I'm no audiophile, so I don't have anything too fancy.

Home Theater: Yamaha HTR-5630 5.1 receiver with Athena ASC-1 center, Sony SS-MB215 front, Sony SS-MB115 rear, Polk Audio PSW404 sub. Save for the subwoofer, they're all entry level stuff, but I think they sound great. I'm planning on "downgrading" my speakers to satellites in a few months. Big speakers seemed like a good idea back when I bought them, but I've decided they're too big.

Computer: Harman/Kardon Soundsticks II 2.1 system. I got some cheap Harman/Kardon speakers with my computer a long time ago and they sounded great for the price, so I went with the same brand. I think their defining feature is that they look crazy, but they sound great nonetheless. Only complaint I have is that the power button is on the back of the subwoofer, so whenever I want to turn them on I have to bend down and reach for the switch. If I had known about the power button being in such a stupid place beforehand I probably wouldn't have bought them, but it doesn't bother me enough to go out and get another system.

One downside to plasma is image retention/burn-in. Or, at least, it used to be. I'm not sure how much of a problem it is now that most plasmas have various technologies designed to prevent it. But since you say you're going to be doing a lot of gaming on it, I would be careful if you go with plasma. With the static HUD elements like health bars constantly on screen, it seems like there would be at least some risk of burn-in. Perhaps someone can tell you otherwise, since I'm just basing my statement off of the research I did when looking for an HDTV.

General Discussion » Alternative to iTunes.

I personally use Songbird, but they stopped supporting iPod syncing a while ago, so I put up with iTunes when I want to transfer music. If you really want to cut the iTunes ties completely though, I've heard good things about doubleTwist.

Bug Reporting » Posting in Firefox

The beta has been having trouble on pretty much all the Whiskey media sites. Hopefully it'll be fixed by the time it goes stable, but for now you should just use 3.6.

Off-Topic » Gentlemen, what do you shave with?

A Braun Series 3 electric shaver (390cc I think?). Doesn't offer as close a shave as a safety razor but it does a good enough job and is quick and convenient.

General Discussion » Regrets

A Sony Walkman digital music player--NW-HD1, I think? It was my first digital music player and I hated the damn thing. I was much younger when I got it and so didn't really do my research. The damn thing couldn't even play MP3s (which is why I make sure to refer to it as a digital music player), only Sony's proprietary ATRAC format. So all formats had to be converted to ATRAC before they could be transferred to the player, and the only software that could do this was called SonicStage. And it was the most atrocious piece of software I have ever used. It was incredibly slow and crashed almost any time I tried to transfer tracks to the player. Just, ugh. That thing still makes me mad.

PC and Mac » Show us your desktop.

I like to keep my desktop very clean. I pin the few programs I use frequently to the taskbar and almost everything else I launch with a press of the Windows key and a few letters of what I'm searching for. My desktop is very empty, as you can see, so I think I'll give Rainmeter a shot.

General Discussion » Getting Things Done Apps

I use 2Do for the iPhone. It has local notifications which is very useful for reminding me when things need to get done. I don't use a desktop GTD app. I always have my phone with me so I've never found much use for one.

Books » How do YOU keep track of your place?

Most of the books I read I get from the library, and they give me a slip of paper with the due date on it when I check out, so I just use that as a bookmark. For the rare book I actually buy though, I just use whatever unimportant paper is nearest to me.

PC and Mac » Trillian 5

I've been using the Trillian 5 beta since it was released. The user interface is sleek and a nice improvement over 4.x. I use it not only for IM, but to notify me of any e-mail I receive and keep track of Twitter updates. Pidgin and Digsby are both good in their own ways, but I find Trillian (especially 5) the most attractive option and that's why I keep coming back.

Love love love love love CoD4. Definitely wasted more of my life playing that game than I did any other. While I certainly like all subsequent CoD games, none of them have managed to eclipse CoD4 as my favorite.
