Did you watch Tom's review of Shin-Chan. Is it too crude and rude for you? http://t.co/WgyHmX8

General Discussion » Anime or Comics??

Surprised but happy to see some anime love ;) These days I, too, probably partake in more Japanese media via manga form than anime-- it's cheaper, among other things --but I only find an American comic that really gets me engaged every so-often-- Strangers in Paradise in early high school, Sandman in late high school, Fables of late, etc. Though part of that is sort of a self-fulfilled prophecy since I spend less time checking out American comics than manga. :)

As for anime...there's some amazing stuff out there. I understand Zaph's point of view, and it's true that a lot of anime is crap. But the same is true of any medium, really-- if you want some phenomenal works to watch (that aren't the usual triumvirate of Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Cowboy Bebop), try Kaiba, Casshern: Sins, The Tatami Galaxy, etc. (The latter two are both available legally at FUNimation's video site.)

Phones » What should I replace my Droid with?

I've heard some recent peeps around town about the HTC Incredible as being comparable to a Nexus One; no thoughts on that one?

General Discussion » Where do you go for your tech deals?

I am an eternal shopper: there are few things I love more than going through a bunch of products (be they mp3 players, computers, or apartments), note the best and worst features, and look at the prices. Ohhh, the prices.

Where do you guys go for your best tech deals? I tend to troll the Fry's and Best Buy ads, and of course I keep up on SlickDeals. I've also found that TechBargains.com sometimes lists some stuff that doesn't make it on to SlickDeals. And Woot has started their own deal-sharing thing at Sellout.Woot.com, but it's pretty hit-or-miss this early in the game. And of course, Newegg has good deals a fair amount of the time.

Where do you go for good prices?

@sora_thekey: No, actually, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't. Literally. ;)

Nah, my mother would never bother, and I think my dad actually still uses Netscape O.o

Phones » What is your ring tone?

Currently, mine is the ending to an anime called Eden of the East.  It's by a band called "School Food Punishment," which always makes me giggle a bit.

I'm probably due for an update to something from Durarara, though.

  Ah...backwards videos. ;)

PC and Mac » Which browser do you prefer and why?

Now that I no longer use POP e-mail-- and I was a holdout for a long time! --Opera probably isn't the greatest browser for me. I've been enjoying Chrome. But I voted for Opera anyway, because it needs more love. It's actually a really good piece of software, and I'm not just talking about the mobile version. (I'm almost the only person I know who has ever used Opera desktop.)

Firefox fanboyism has always been almost as mystifying to me as Apple fanboyism (slightly less because I do appreciate the principles of open development). But the program itself just has such a huge footprint, even the more recent versions that supposedly "fixed" that stuff. :\

General Discussion » What is the most valuable piece of technology you currently own?

My 40" Toshiba HDTV, surely. My laptop was a relative cheapie at $500-600, and my phone is a couple of generations old. I've also got a PSP slim, but the first kind of slim, and a DS, but not a DSi. And my PS3 is the smaller hard drive version.

I do have a pretty nifty portable media player though-- it's the Creative Zen Vision:W. Unfortunately they stopped making them, but I really like it. Really nice widescreen.

EDIT: Oh wait, duh! I'm one of the crazy people that bought the Sony Vaio P when it came out. For how little I use the thing, it is definitely the most expensive piece of equipment I own. And it runs Vista, too, blech. Unfortunately, it's really just TOO tiny, I just can't be productive on it at all :\

PC and Mac » iMovie on Windows... Is it possible?

Man, I wish. The two things I like most on my work Mac are iMovie and built-in screencapping. And Windows 7's Snipping Tool is good enough for me for the latter, so...

PC and Mac » Nvidia or ATI graphic cards, which do you use and why?

I got a new Toshiba with an ATI Radeon 4200. It was a budget computer, but I wanted something that was better than your average Intel integrated graphics card-- I don't play a lot of hefty games but I watch enough video that I wanted something just a touch better.

By contrast, when coworker John was shopping, he's much more of a PC gamer and he had a higher budget, so we shopped around and got a nice Lenovo with the i7 processor and a 1gb NVidia GeForce, forget the model number off the top of my head.

Phones » Android: When is it a must-have?

@Kane: I was just at Best Buy picking up FFXIII (yay), and I saw the HTC Devour, which I hadn't gotten to poke at before. They didn't have a live demo I could play with and the sales rep didn't know its specs (oh, Best Buy), but it definitely had a nice keyboard, at least for my personal tastes-- very separated buttons = easier to type without looking, yay!

That said, I *believe* its specs are a touch below even the Droid Eris-- I can't find definitive specs anywhere, actually, but it doesn't appear to have a Snapdragon and it ships with Android 1.6 (though I'd expect it to get the same upgrade to 2.1 eventually).

Phones » Android: When is it a must-have?

@fry: The Droid has a physical keyboard, although I've heard it's not all that great, the people I know who have Droids seem to like it okay.

@Kane: Don't I know it! But if something was officially announced for this summer I'd consider holding out. I get really frustrated with Apple drones who think Steve Jobs poops gold, but I can't deny the iPhone is a great device. (Though I don't like their app store nonsense and being able to more freely download/sideload software is a huge  bonus for me.)

Cameras » Movie Cameras, Folks

@Dan: I do understand that a camera that was either similar to the Flip or was another model of the Flip-- heard Will mention it so I'm sure there'll be something on the site about it eventually! --that has a microphone jack.

But yes, a 3.5mm mic jack was a big part of why I got the Panasonic. Its built-in mic is actually quite good in most scenarios, but when you're at a big show (be it for electronics, video games, comics, or anime!) a unidirectional mic that won't absorb as much of the ambient noise is a godsend.

Of course, on the other hand, with the microphone in the Panasonic will only record audio in mono, which provides yet ANOTHER fun challenge, since I do my editing in iMovie and iMovie has just enough stuff to be way more useful than any of the relatively "easy" video programs I've tried, but not quite enough to really be awesome software-- like, say, no advanced audio settings whatsoever. :\ (I expect someday I'll just give up and try a copy of Final Cut and slooooowly learn my way around it like I've done with Photoshop since I started high school, but that's a rather expensive venture, so we'll see.)

Cameras » Movie Cameras, Folks

@Dan: I don't own and have not used a Flip myself, so I really can't officially endorse it, but as I mentioned, we were looking at some footage on Giant Bomb taken entirely on a Flip, and we also have a bit of Flip footage in an upcoming Anime Vice video-- I haven't worked with the footage myself, but from a quick glance it looks pretty close in quality the aforementioned (and much more expensive) Panasonic camera, although my eye is quite untrained on that front. (If you'd like to compare for yourself, here's some footage shot on my Panasonic.)

Cameras » Movie Cameras, Folks

@Dan: It's internal storage-- they market it as "120 minutes" and "60 minutes," which are 8gb and 4gb respectively.

I actually got a really good deal on that Panasonic camcorder. I sent my mother to pick up a different camera for me, but the guy heavily sold her on this Panasonic one because he said it also came with a 32gb SD card, if you can imagine! I told her to check and make really really sure and he swore up and down it did. I got home and my mother and I opened the box, and of course, no SD card-- it even said on the box, "SD card not included" (though the image was of a 32gb).

So I went back to Fry's and complained about how the guy either made a big mistake or had lied to my mother, and they handed me a brand new 32gb SD card with almost no fuss.

 Ahhh...good times.
