Home Theater » Netflix Launches in UK

I will be signing up for the free month when i get home to compare it to lovefilm. From the examples it gives on the home page the selection does look a little better than lovefilm streaming especially in the TV department. Here is hoping it works out well and they keep adding new content.

The only worry I have is the two giants competing against each other with exclusive deals which means users will have to hold multiple accounts to get everything they want. With satellite TV far cheaper in the UK than cable and other avenues in the US they will need even more value to compete. (When they talk about $100's for internet and TV on GB and tested it always shocks me)

General Discussion » Google Market apps have only made 7% of Apple iOS apps

One thing that bothers me about android apps at the moment is this whole free app with separate unlock app purchase download. It makes redownloading old apps annoying and it just a really janky way of solving the free trial problem. As for the stats posted, given how much cheaper android devices generally are you can expect the majority of it's customers to be less willing to part with their cash. Comscore found that nearly half of all ipad owners have a houshold income of over $100,000 and iphone are pricey with very expensive contracts whereas a lot of android devices are sold on contracts for either free or very cheap with a monthly bill far lower than the iphone.

General Discussion » Ridiculous Buying Advice From Companies

isn't 30mb per second close to raw 720p video? Do they think everyone is using cisco to make their video conferencing calls?

General Discussion » Tested the show, where did you go?

Episode 1 was such a great kick off and showed a lot of promise. I thought they guys had said the first few had been planned out to at least some extent and it was going to be a monthly thing but that was back in early august. Just checking that it's still a thing because it was a really nice addition to the tested video selection.

On another note, where did the happy hour go too? I know it was going to be less regular after the second BLLSL but then it turned out to be never! D:

General Discussion » Why doesn't Tested have quests?

Without the wiki they don't have the content for quests. I don't like them, but they will come with the wiki because they are a very clever way of pushing up page views which is great for advertising revenue (which isn't a bad thing) and also showing off some of the work the community puts into the wiki (if people stick around long enough after the achievement pings that is)

General Discussion » Whiskey Media adopting Meebo IM and youtube videos (GB post)

I have had a couple of points I have thought over after the GB post yesterday.

I understand they have to monetise the non-premium subscriber user base but that meebo bar is fucking awful. If they want global interest tracking with third party cookies to serve you the best ads, that's fine but use one of the dozens of global online advertising agencies to provide a much more professional and subtle service. The meebo bar goes against every tenant of whiskey design and it always concerns me when I see screenshots of american ads and now this because they look so out of place against the brilliantly designed whiskey sites.

Also with this new youtube integration, the lack of HD content is becoming ever more arbitrary for non subs because now it is costing them absolutely nothing. Although we all think of youtube as handy cam cat videos there is a vast and rapidly growing section that focuses on high quality and well produced content especially in the gaming arena. 720p is expected and 1080 is growing ever more common and I fear whiskey will come off as behind the trend. I think the shift to youtube is a good idea but it must be handled properly.

I love whiskey and the content it produces but they have made a lot of odd business decisions (and even some content ones) and I think it is hurting them in the long run. Please don't throw away all this hard work with stupid decisions.

Games » Gathering Interest: 12-player Civ V Game near-ish to Christmas?

I'm GMT so I can see this being a slight issue as whenever we start one of the three major areas will be around midnight. Oh well we will have to solder on and find a solution. Do you think teams would be a good idea or are we going every man for himself with wafer thin alliances?

I am in! (If timings work out)

I should say I am not the best unless rushing gunpowder at all costs is the perfect strategy.

This is Only a Test » Mad Libs on the Podcast?

All I remember about mad libs was lots of dead air and Gary instantly saying any guest's attempt was not as good as Jeff Green's. I loved it!

Phones » Few questions from a new android user.

@stevemanu: http://doubletwist.com/http://doubletwist.com/is your friend here, once installed it can watch your itunes for playlists etc and sync everything you want to your device. I believe wired syncing is free with wireless costing a little extra (your first sync should be wired anyway as it will probably take ages). I use it on windows but the website says it works for mac too. The app itself is alright I'm not sure how much you demand from a music app but you can always check it out for free. I am also not sure if you can then use that synced music with another app but a little research should help you there.

As for podcasting the paid doggcatcher app is really good if a little pricey. Google listen is also ok too and free!

I use both these paid apps and would recommend them, especially doggcatcher.

Hope that helped!

Off-Topic » Tested actually feels like a community (to me)

@Greg818: But, but, but cheese is delicious D:

I guess I will have to give it a go and report back the results. I never thought I would be sent such a long wiki article on material science to solve my issue but thank you anyway. This is the exact reason why we need a tested wiki!

I couldn't agree more. I will have to check out the tested IRC, I did not know that even existed.

@lane: Any tips on getting the omelette to hold as one. Whenever I craft one it always comes out totally broken and is more like jazzy scrambled eggs, still delicious though.

Bug Reporting » CONGRATULATIONS! Are you kidding me Whiskey Media?

@will: Having interned at a large ad network before I understand the hard situation you guys are in as the publisher is never really the one in control until you get to the levels of the msn homepage and places like that. Having said that, some ad networks do provide more quality control than others and are generally the less automated ones. By the looks of the shots I have seen, it seems like an automated ad exchange auction which can bring about some real bad ads.

This may sound weird but I will try to drop a hint when I go back there part time during my final year of university as they are always looks for niche sites to properly match with ads.

General Discussion » OLYMPIANS! Art Part 2, Boogaloo.

@conmused: Steal away! I went a bit crazy with the watercolour brush in MSpaint thinking that it would hide my bad artistry. It went alright for will but when I got to the raccoons I thought I better label them twice but now I have had the dilemma of spelling it with 1 c which is not the standard spelling but wikipedia says it's ok so lets roll with it.
