"Chaos on St. Clair" sounds like the name of Doug Ford's bizarro Rolling Stones cover band.

Phones » Cyanogen 6.1 stable released for various Android phones

Upgraded my Nexus One to 6.1 RC2 last week. In terms of a performance, a few instability issues with Twitter/camera seem to be fixed, and the FM radio app is definitely a very cool/impressive addition. I'll have to move to stable over the next few days.

General Discussion » Blood Coltan

This was an amazing article. I've had the pleasure of meeting Omar a few times, and he and Ian are doing some of the best work in Canadian tech journalism right now.

I've never understood how, if Africa-mined Colton is being being mixed with the conflict-mined Australian variant, why can't we stop the flow into Australia? It seems as if miners in both Africa and Australia might be artificially benefiting from the cost markup of conflict-free Colton by padding Australian-stock with Africa-mined materials.

Coffee » Tassimo?

@lane: Oh man. Tim Horton's is most definitely the former. Pretty awful when black.

@jasonefmonk: I had one of the first Tassimos for about a week when it was still a Gillette/Braun product. The technology behind it was cool — the barcodes in particular — but I wasn't too fond of the drinks it made. I remember the pucks contained a sort of syrup, as opposed to powder, so it still had a very "instant drink" feel to it. It also seemed as if there was a lot of syrup left behind in the pucks once the drink had been poured, which made me wonder how efficient/cost effective it really was.

Mind you, this was years ago, and I'm sure the design/operation of the product has improved. How much do the pucks cost these days?

General Discussion » Best "geeky" stocking stuffers

@Fripplebubby: Seconding this.

Another cool idea are gloves with capacitive material on the fingers so you can use your touch-screen phone without taking the gloves off (assuming you live in a place with snow/cold where gloves are necessary). There are some available online, though you can make your own pretty easily too for cheap.

Not sure about the Space Invaders one, but a lot of Will/Norm's shirts seem to come from places like Think Geek and Threadless too.

Waiting on another wireless trigger for my Canon DSLR. You'd think I'd learn after buying the last cheap model off eBay, but for less than $20 I guess I can afford to keep buying a new one every year.

General Discussion » eye-fi

I've done it. It works — albeit slowly — but it's a surefire way to eat up your data plan if you're not careful. If you're actually serious about that sort of setup, you might be better off using the card's selective upload function, where only photos you "protect" are uploaded. Alternatively, you can configure the device to latch onto open wifi access points as well, which might work better for your uses. It's admittedly cool to go shooting throughout the city only to have those photos sitting on your desktop when you return home.

PC and Mac » Christmas time means video cards!

Tom's Hardware is always great for this sort of stuff. If you can find it for a decent price, I've been hearing the GTX 460 is a pretty mean card within this range, and Tom's seems to agree.

General Discussion » How do you connect to the Internet?

@nickb64: D'oh. Right you are. I think the reason I always associate things like FiOS with cable is because, both are based on a fibre backbone, but only FiOS can handle that last mile distance to the home. Well, in city centers, at least. But I digress.

Also, forgot to mention my connection. 15Mbps/1Mbps via Teksavvy, which is essentially running on Rogers' backbone here in Toronto/GTA. Uncapped too, which is glorious.

PC and Mac » High End Computer/Poor Framerates

@theduddler: Curious, but did you stress test the system after building it? Dual vs. triple channel RAM isn't going to give you a decrease in performance over time, but bad RAM certainly could. We did a post on it a few months back, and I think it'd be well worth your time to let it run through both Memtest and Prime95 over the course of an afternoon and see what you get.

Anything else you can give us in terms of performance issues? Is it only noticeable while gaming? Can you try, say, swapping an older/different graphics card in and ensuring that's not the problem either? At this point, it really seems like you're going to have to undergo some trial and error to narrow down what hardware component is causing your problems.

General Discussion » How do you connect to the Internet?

Heh. I'm surprised there's actually so many people still hooked up via DSL. My impression was that Cable had dominance these days, particularly in the US with FIOS and such. It's been ages since I looked up the stats, but I'd love to see a good breakdown of broadband penetration by connection type that's relatively current.

Games » Tested stance on modded consoles

Man, it's been ages since I've dabbled with XBMC on my original box. I don't know how close the old branch is, but you'll want to grab scripts for IMDB/metadata information if that's not already built in. There were lots of great scripts for YouTube and video streaming sites as well, and I'd image a lot of the newer scripts should still work since it's still python.

General Discussion » Need Help!! PC keeps shutting off.

@funzzo: How long can you get it to to stay on in the BIOS? It sounds like heat, especially if it's doing a hard shutdown like that. Your CPU will kill the system if heat passes a certain threshold, so that could be a problem. Also, as a side note, 850w might be overkill — what are you specs like anyhow?
