Arkasai replied to the topic Kindle Fire @ WalMart on the Tablets board.
I bought my girlfriend a Fire for Christmas and she loves it. It's still running the stock firmware which I will say isn't that bad. There are plenty of options on XDA though if you don't like the stock firmware, there are a few ICS 4.0 based roms. I'd say it's definitely one of the better options out there in terms of cheap mainstream tablets, works great for browsing the ...

Arkasai replied to the topic An infuriating thing about Ubuntu on the PC and Mac board.
It doesn't work because Netflix has to jump through whatever flaming hoop Hollywood holds out, and often that means implementing the latest and greatest DRM. The problems with Moonlight are that there's only a handful of people that contribute to the project (last I checked) and they're three versions behind. Your options in this situation are limited.

For a second there I thought Windows 8 might adopt that right click for everything menu from LXDE...or was it XFCE I can't remember but it was a window manager I used in college that basically let to access everything on the system from the right click menu.

As much as I hate to say it: Those Beats headphones have proven the average Joe who doesn't know anything about sound quality is willing to pay over $300 for plastic headphones made in China. I'd say at least 10% of those people will eventually move on to a well established and respected brand like Sennheiser or Grado after those Beats fall apart. I would say even excluding those people, ...

Arkasai replied to the topic Good camera for video broadcasting? on the Cameras board.
What's your budget? Are you planning on using the camera for other things like taking still pictures for your site? Is manual control important? If 720p resolution, good indoor performance, and a low price are your main concerns a webcam or point and shoot will do the job. You can dress up cheaply recorded video in post, but you have to know your equipment's limitations and your editing software well. ...

Arkasai replied to the topic Canon 600D (T3i) or Sony Nex-5n on the Cameras board.
You made the right choice. Tons of shops work on Canon cameras should something happen to it on the trip, whereas you'd have to send the Sony...well to Sony I imagine. Resale value should be a little better too. Be very alert in crowds, my girlfriend had her camera lifted from her purse while she stepped onto a train in Paris. Be mindful of exposed neck straps, because you don't ...

Arkasai replied to the topic My university campus at night: (Photo) on the Cameras board.
Props if you took this on a phone cause it looks unedited and exif byte order suggests a Motorola proc. Looks like you started cropping it, I'd have gone a little further and taken more away from the sky and the foreground up to the bend in the road. I'm kind of split on the color, on one hand I think a longer exposure or layering multiple exposures might add ...

These models can now be found in the "old products" section of the Japanese Nikon website. There have been lots of rumors about a D800, though very little in the way of a D300s replacement. The D7000 while superior in many, many ways still isn't of that caliber and can't fill the D300s shoes. So we'll likely see new pro DX and FX bodies from Nikon in the coming months.I'm ...

Arkasai replied to the topic Merits of FLAC/OGG formats on the General Discussion board.
Only way to go if you have the choice. Isn't OGG Vorbis lossy? My memory is a little hazy but I remember my OGG files sounding much better out of my Rio Karma and Grado 325is than MP3s at the same bit rate, and the OGGs were smaller. Nowadays storage isn't an issue so uncompressed lossless is much more common.I wouldn't say you have to be an audiophile to hear ...

Some people's inability to see the promise in tech like this shows a real lack of imagination. I'd like to see it baked into Windows or OSX, cause as a stand alone product it might not catch on. I like any tool that cuts out middle men, I wouldn't have to use dropbox or send as many emails with this kind of tech.

@Rallier said:1.Out of all the file storing sites Megaupload is/was the one i felt was the less shady really. It was the more professional looking one anyway along with Mediafire. Someone who paid for the service and has had his/her documents "erased" without prior notice most definitely has the right the be enraged by the situation. That said i'm sure that Megaupload will resurface soon enough.2.I'm glad i'm not the ...

While there was plenty of legitimate content on Megaupload...lets not kid ourselves, the owners of the site made their millions off a massive database of porn, TV shows, and movies that millions of people had to click through ads to see. Everyone who used the site knew it was shady, so their outrage feels very forced to me. Sure you lost money on a year subscription and tons of data, ...

Arkasai replied to the topic So 4K is coming on the Home Theater board.
@WilltheMagicAsian said:@MAGZine:Hey there was the IBM T221, everything will just be obscenely small. That's cool, someone else mentioned they already make use of 2k/4k panels in the medical industry. I see 4k, more than 3D, pushing hardware in the future. Many of us are already pushing close to 4K resolution (if not more) across multiple displays.Any guesses as to what the actual resolutions we'll be getting? And at these higher resolutions, ...

Arkasai started the topic So 4K is coming on the General Discussion board.
So at the moment it looks like we'll be seeing 4K TVs first. Without many other sources I think most of us will be feeding these panels with PCs. I dunno about the rest if you but I'd be much more comfortable with a 30" 4K panel for work. I didn't follow CES too closely this year, were there any signs that smaller 4K screens are on the way?

Wouldn't it be neat if it had an F mount like Fuji's DSLRs? It'd be like what some people wanted the Nikon 1 system to be but better.
