The Tested Manifesto

Welcome to Tested.com. We’d like to be your friends.

I want a better tech/gadget/pc/general nerd interest site. I want a site that works for the reader, free of annoying, intrusive, and obnoxious ads. I want a site that tells the truth about everything, whether they say something is awesome or terrible. I want a site that’s incorruptible, focused 100% on telling me whether a new piece of kit is worthy of my hard earned money. I don't know of any sites that cover all of the topics that I'm most interested in and take the ethical stand that I'm absolutely convinced is necessary to make any general-interest site covering technology succeed, so I found some like-minded folks, and launched it myself.

This is just the first post on the site, but I expect it to be the most important. Why? Because this is where I lay the general ground rules for the site. It's pretty simple stuff, but I think it distinguishes Tested from any of the other sites out there today. Here are the rules:

  • We work for you. You are the reason we’re here. This is your site. Without you we are nothing.
  • We don't compromise. We stand behind every single piece of content on the site.
  • We test so we can separate the gear that’s awesome from the gear that sucks. This is our job.
  • We won’t run crappy, annoying, or dangerous ads, but we will run ads that are topical and relevant to you.
  • We will tell the truth. We will endeavor to be perfect, but when we err, we'll admit it.
  • We're more than a buying site, we're users too. We'll show you how to squeeze every ounce of awesome from the gear you already have.
  • We won’t engage in fanboyism. We will evaluate products based on their individual merits, not an irrational love of the companies that spawn them.
  • We won't be cynical. We live in an age of wonder and revolution, full of amazing technology that's advancing faster every day. Also, cynicism sucks.
  • We won't accept shitty hardware, software, or services. We do not brook failure. We reserve the right to punish bad products.
  • We're going to open Tested up to you guys. But with great power comes great responsibility. Act like an adult, and please don't be a dick.
  • We’re going to have fun. Lots of fun. We’re here because we're nerds, and we love tech. You should plan to have fun too.
  • This is just the beginning.

We've got a lot of great content going up this week (and next week, and the week after that and... well, pretty much until you stop coming to the site), so dig in and let me know what you think. In the meantime, check the video below to get an idea of the type of tests that we'll be running at Tested.

We hope you didn't have you iphone (now 3gs) in your pocket unprotected during these tests.
matthewabelon March 8, 2010 at 7:53 p.m.
I dig the swimming outfit.

Is this going to be the basic video style?  I would have enjoyed a quick breakdown at the end on what you would recommend - I guess I can tell both protect, but the case took better video.  I also thought you could have gotten a little more rugged - maybe a time test.  Put the flips under constant water for a certain amount of time.  Just to see.

And a mud test.  There should always be a mud test.

Definitely enjoyed the vid, though.

sounds great. the vid was amazing.

This video is so good that it actually makes me angry. Great job everyone!
Zenaxzdon March 8, 2010 at 9:42 p.m.
Anyone else think the video had kind of a mythbusters vibe to it? I got that vibe and I liked it. Was awesome and hilarious, and informative to boot >_>
FunExplosionson March 8, 2010 at 10 p.m.
Everything about that video is awesome. Very nice.
dr_mantason March 8, 2010 at 10:33 p.m.
That was very well made and informative, love it.
But Guys, just some friendly advice -
Don't make your videos so overly scripted, improvise some of it. Dare I say look at some giant bomb videos for inspiration.
All in all -  good job, i wish you luck

Cool vid bros
PunkxBlazeon March 8, 2010 at 10:59 p.m.
This is the beginning of a beautiful, beautiful thing.
SoulofaRoboton March 9, 2010 at 1:47 a.m.
@mantas: I don't know, I kind of liked the overly scripted nature of it; it made it somewhat cheesy, but in a good way. Sure not everything should be like this, but for what they were doing here I think it worked.

Anyway, guys good luck with the site; I hope you can stick to that manifesto cause it sounds like something the tech area could use... I especially liked the no fanboyism part, I'm getting sick of that from certain other sites... well, all know who I mean.
Slaneeshon March 9, 2010 at 3:36 a.m.
That post is almost the pledge of allegiance
Zombienutzon March 9, 2010 at 5:04 a.m.
I am looking forward to the future of this site.
Stonyman65on March 9, 2010 at 5:20 a.m.
Looks great.
nailerron March 9, 2010 at 5:30 a.m.
This is a moment of joy.  After Giant Bomb this seems ideal, now go sirs, GO TEST THINGS!
MattyFTMon March 9, 2010 at 5:48 a.m.
Awesome stuff. I'm looking forward to the database stuff you've got in the works. A massive technology database will be awesome.
phobicon March 9, 2010 at 6:33 a.m.
Well the massive technology database site thing is being done by a couple of peeps that have been tech blogging for a while but pretty much all of those sites have been doing the fanboyism thing to death. I won't say any other blog names but we all know who the culprits are. *grin* Hopefully Tested will stick to their manefesto because this site looks like a breath of fresh air right off the get go.

Anyways, good luck with the site! I'm really looking forward to seeing more of what you guys have planned.
will staff is online on March 9, 2010 at 6:39 a.m.
@phobic: I hope that people don't take "no fanboyism" to mean that we won't be covering Apple stuff. It just means that we'll evaluate all of the products we test without the filter of love for any particular brand.
