Newest Chrome Dev Release Adds Aero Peek Functionality

Google's open source browser project takes another step in the right direction by adding support for Aero Peek.

The newest build of Chromium, the open-source project behind Google's Chrome browser, was released earlier today, and includes a much requested Windows 7 compatibility feature. Chrome's Dev channel now include Aero Peek functionality for individual tabs within any open Chromium windows. Aero Peek, of course, is the Windows 7 feature that lets you preview open windows and browser tabs by hovering your mouse over the corresponding taskbar icon. Previously, it was a feature only available with IE8, Safari, and Firefox 3.6. Light testing of Chromium's implementation shows that Aero Peek works as expected, though it still lacks features like download status integration with the taskbar icon.

Edit: Added Safari to list of browsers that support Aero Peek.
Edit 2: Updated article to include info about dev channel release of Aero Peek feature

Actually, Safari has supported Aero Peek for a while now.

@salvodelli: Fixed, thanks!

Am I the only one who doesn't like the tabs being included in aero peek. I like having one click to go back to the browser instead of two.

@jtbixler: Nope, I feel the same way. Tabs are good enough.

Chrome has addon support now, I am pretty sure there is a AD blocker and many of those others probably exist as well. I haven't bothered looking through them all since I felt pretty content after finding one that had cute Japanese ladies showing me the time. I mean what else do you need when you find that.

@jtbixler: If it works like Firefox and IE8, you can still click once and it will go back to the last browser you had open. You only get the peek stuff if you hover over the icon for a sec (it's still just one click).

My understanding is that Chrome's implementation of Adblock still allows ads to load, and only hides them. In other words, potential malware would still get through. Until it has the same functionality as under Firefox, it's wholly irrelevant.

@will: That didn't work in Safari, and the only time I've used IE is when I went to download chrome.

I'll be thrilled the day they fix the way it names processes for WIndows 7's taskbar--when you use the Application Shortcuts functionality, it gets really crazy and tries merging and reassigning which "pinned" item is active. (I have three "Chrome" shortcuts; Chrome proper and two email accounts as application shortcuts. It wreaks utter havoc.)

Look at the awesome things that developers have done with this over the last little while.  My Zune player has the miniplayer controls built in!  Just hover and next song.  Looking forward to browsers having commands built right into the preview images!

Do I need Win7 for this?

@SJSchmidt93: Yes. You need Win7 for this to work.
Optikalon March 20, 2010 at 8:13 a.m.
@SJSchmidt93:  While Aero was in Vista, Peek is a new functionality addition exclusive to Windows 7.  As seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Aero#Windows_7

I've never used any thing but Chrome on Windows 7, and I don't remember not being able to see the image of the browser come up when I hovered over the task bar.  How can this be new?  When I'm pretty sure it always worked like this.  I guess it's possible I'm wrong and never noticed.

First of all nice site guys. As for the Aero peek feature I don't think Firefox 3.6 supports it since it has never showed up on my system, but the new version of Opera 10.5 does. I'm glad to hear that Chrome is getting this nifty little feature and now since I was able to install the Adblock plugin I've started using Firefox less and less.
