Never Give Up: Microsoft May Be Working on One More Zune

Just in time for Apple's new iPod Touch announcement, a rumor is brewing indicating that Microsoft is going to give the Zune another go.

Microsoft has successfully become the unstoppable juggernaut of the desktop OS world and a giant among very few giants in the gaming world, but it's never picked up much traction in the portable media player world. Every since it released the Zune in 2006 it's been seen as Apple's unsuccessful tagalong, trying and failing to make a dent in the iPod's market share.

Just in time for Apple's new iPod Touch announcement, a rumor is brewing indicating that Microsoft is going to give the Zune another go. According to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, a Microsoft-linked source has told her that the company "is still considering rolling out at least one more Zune HD media player."

The Zune has generally been a half step ahead of the iPod from a technical standpoint up until recently. It could output 720p video to a TV nearly a year before the new iPod Touches gained the ability, and its HD Radio tuning capability has yet to be matched by Apple's media players. However, with the new iPod Touch getting a 3.5-inch, 960 by 640 resolution Retina screen, the current Zune HD's 3.3-inch 480 by 272 resolution OLED screen isn't going to cut it.

At this point, the Zune's future looks grim. Microsoft has already thrown a lot of tech and marketing money its way and barely chipped at the iPod's undisputed domination of the portable media player world. For the Zune to have any chance of getting a decent market share, it's going to have to accomplish three things. First, it has to offer some new features that the iPods don't have. Second, it has to be cheaper than the equivalent iPod model. Third, and perhaps the most difficult, it has to overcome the stigma of being the iPod's unwanted cousin.

Do you think the Zune has a chance against the iPod? What can Microsoft do for the next generation of Zune HD to make it successful? Discuss below.

I'm not sure if this is warranted since they are releasing Windows Phone 7 which will cover this. I think Microsoft should just leap frog since more and more people are buying smart phones and might eventually just take over regular mp3 players.

I'd be fine with it. I love my zune hd.

Wait... the article mentions that the ZuneHD was ahead of Apple's tech on three fronts (screen tech, HD output, and HD radio)... but then says that Microsoft needs to release a device that has better tech in order to beat the iPod?

What killed the ZuneHD was it being too late to the party. By the time MS released a killer Zune product (and didn't market it), the iPod Touch was already eating up the market for non-smartphone media devices. The ZuneHD doesn't have an app store so it couldn't compete.

But, if the next Zune product was just a WM7 phone... without the phone... then it might be a compelling product vs the iPod Touch.

The only two things I would appreciate on my Zune HD is a camera and a speaker. I hate having to grab my headphones to do basically anything sound-related with it.

Oh, and a WebKit browser or a version of Mobile IE that doesn't suck.

But I am in love with my Zune HD otherwise!

Edit: Almost forgot. Third party app support!

I am interested in the Xbox Live integration in the Windows Phone 7 devices.  If Microsoft were to market this new Zune device as a portable gaming device, and figured out a way to bring content similar to what currently appears on the Xbox Live Arcade to the device, then I'd snap one up.

I don't need another cell phone, and I don't need another portable media player.  I'm always interested in new gadgets for portable gaming though.

Too little too late.
I decided to keep my zune hd 32gig, but I went ahead and dropped my Zunepass I was getting sick of the consistent downgrade of quality on the zune pass service. Songs constantly getting mislabeled, songs losing sync rights before they were set to expire, servers consistantly being down so when I went to go do something it would come up with some damn error.

when I was told to use the zune library reset tool by zune customer service cause of sync rights errors, it fucked up my entire library of like 3000 albums both cd's I owned, and got from zunepass...so I dropped zune pass and had to get rid of my entire library and rebuild it from scratch.
Then it was later that I learned the free 10 song credits I had used to download stuff all of which meant shit, since the the majority of stuff on zune marketplace is mp3 downloads, you only get 1 one time download of mp3s when you buy those mp3's so I was screwed in that regard, so pretty much 6 months of zune credits down the drain.

and dont even get me on the price and build quality of accessories for this thing, the hdmi out port box thing is insanely and uselessly expensive and the accessories I have tried have been complete shit, the FM transmitter for the thing was outdone by a cheap universal one.

I love my ZuneHD 32gb.  Its a music and podcast beast that gets me through the office day.  I think zunes have always been the better product, software and hardware, (especially the software).  Never did zune pass, just ripped my old CDs and now only buy amazon mp3 albums.

Apples head start, name branding, and itunes store have made it nearly impossible to get a foot hold.    But for me, if MS keeps making them I'll keep buying them...that is until I make the jump to a smart phone.

The other thing, beside being late to the game, is the iPod/iPhone world has 100 times more accesories out there built specifically for it. You can go to the grocery store and find iPod accesories, but Zune? I'm not even certain that the Windows 7 phone will really make a dent in Apple's empire. They have the old  Windows Mobile stigma to get past.
Dezinuson Sept. 2, 2010 at 9:28 a.m.
Do they really need a big badass screen for an mp3 player? I mean I understand the ipod with its apps can take advantage of it, but the Zune doesn't really do as much of that to my knowledge. Admittedly I'd never watch a movie on a portable device so I don't consider that a valid use.

I'll just keep using my Zen from 2006 I guess...
Forteon Sept. 2, 2010 at 9:32 a.m.
I think you missed the most important aspect that will make or break the Zune.  Apps.  If Microsoft can create the framework needed where devs. can easily make apps for both Windows Phone and Zune, then I would buy one.  Right now the iPod Touch is more of a PDA and the Zune is an MP3 player.

I like Zune better simply because I hate iTunes.

This pretty thoroughly sums up my view on it as well. I feel the Zune never managed to get a fair shake at it and, like Will_ mentioned, Apple's branding was too much to overcome. The Zune is/was a better product but not enough people got their hands on it.
jpozzoloon Sept. 2, 2010 at 10:15 a.m.
as has been said, it's 100% apps. let the zune work with wm7 apps, get hundreds made, and you're good to go. don't and it won't. I LOVE zune. but they need more apps.
Decogon Sept. 2, 2010 at 10:16 a.m.
I really hope they do give it a go.  I am a product designer for a living, and in my opinion, the Zune is actually a superior product.  Granted that's highly subjective.  I owned the first Zune, which was pretty awesome, but the zune software was holding it back, now with the HD version of the Zune, its own featureset is holding it back.  The hardware is an ID guys dream.  It just has some key things left to turn it into the true ipod killer.  Almost there guys...

I agree completely. Zune is a better MP3 player with a way better interface-hands down.

Crappy desktop software does not help either.
chicklitton Sept. 2, 2010 at 10:37 a.m.
If they make the high capacity available now... and use the same dock connector as iPod, I'll buy one right now. I'm not going to fuck around with different adapters, especially if Zune's future is tenuous. And I have no use for low capacity players.
RichardAshleyon Sept. 2, 2010 at 11:46 a.m.
I had a Zune for about a week but I just couldn't deal with it after that. First, it didn't seem any better then a coby I could get for 20$ at the Rite-aid. Then the store and playing interfaced just ate the crap out of my hardware. Itunes used a whole hell of a lot less.

Woah, what? What marketing? The Zune HD marketing campaign was pathetic. Do you know how many people out there still don't even know what a Zune is?!? It drives me crazy.

Yes, another hot issue with Zune owners is the lack of apps. Personally, I don't give a rip. I never touch them but people have been bitching since release date and once and a while they toss us some lame word game.

I've had a Zune 80, 32GB HD, and I love love love the Zune pass but I worry about the future.
neo1piv014on Sept. 2, 2010 at 3:24 p.m.
One of my friends bought the Zune HD a couple months after it came out, and I thought it was a fantastic little device. Especially compared to my brother's iPod touch. I just thought the Zune had a much slicker interface, and it seemed to understand that it was just about the media, not about all the extra crap. However, with smart phones advancing as much as they are, I don't see a huge future for portable media devices anyways. My HD2 with the 16gb card it came with handles my media with aplomb, and cost less (on contract) than an iPod or Zune with that much storage.  Still....that's not to say I wouldn't use the Zune HD if I actually screwed myself up into getting one.
Infininjaon Sept. 2, 2010 at 4:01 p.m.
My Zune 80 is still going just fine. Love the Zune software too, but I absolutely won't touch the marketplace. It's annoying enough having to deal with Microsoft Points on the 360. Plus many albums cost more than the sum of their tracks on the Zune marketplace. The whole thing comes off as either shady or not thought through from a consumer's perspective.
