Monitoring wild animals can be a difficult endeavor – especially when they range as far as the mighty sperm whale. The immense cetaceans travel all over the world, and their behavior can be affected by boats or small planes. But marine biologist Wayne Perryman has discovered that the massive mammals don’t seem to notice or care if a drone is dogging their trails, and he’s dispatched unmanned aircraft to follow sperm whales to great success. He’s currently planning another drone trip where the vehicle will actually capture spray from a sperm whale’s blowhole to extract DNA information and more.
