Gary Whitta's relation to Whiskey Media

  • I've noticed a lot of Gary Whitta (sorry if I've misspelled the last name!) on the podcast. I really enjoy having him on, but I'm curious as to his relationship with Whiskey Media/Tested. Is he an employee there, or just friends with the guys there?
  • I am not 100% sure but I believe he's a friend of Will and Norm as well as the Giant Bomb guys.
  • I didn't know anything about Gary Whitta before he became a regular on the podcast but he has quickly become a legend.
  • He's not an employee, to my recollection.  He's a friend of theirs.
  • I think Will and Norm knew him from their time at MaximumPC and PCGamer.
  • He used to be editor in chief of PC Gamer Mag in the '90s. Will and Norm used to work for the same company that makes that magazine, at MaxPC, before working at Whiskey Media.

    you spelled his name right.
  • Plus, Gary Whitta wrote The Book of Eli.

Which you should all buy on DVD and Blu-ray.
  • Yes, i also wonder about this. Clearly, he has other things going on as well, but it would surprise me if he is indeed doing all the podcast and TNT appearances for free, just 'cause he's having fun. That's just too much time to invest into something every week to not be compensated for it.

Not that this is any of my business. I hope he'll continue to be on the sites. He's a fun guy.

Not really... He's a writer. He can do his work when ever the heck he pleases. That's what gives him the freedom of going into the Whiskey Media office all the time.

If you were welcome there at any time of day, wouldn't you go there to shoot the shit in your free time too?

He mentioned on a recent podcast that he "had a good year." I'm assuming referring to royalties picked up from things he's written (i.e. BoE). So maybe he does have the time to hang around and just be in Whiskey stuff for free. Plus he gets free PR and to plug his stuff.

I hope he keeps doing the podcast. I've always liked his stuff going back to when I had a PCGamer subscription in the nineties when he was EIC.

Norm worked at PCGamer too, he was the intern for a while.  He might not have overlapped with Gary's EIC time but it was close.
  • At the start I wasn't too keen on him but the podcast feels perfect when he's on its just as good as the bombcast and this gem of course.

  • I'm pretty sure no one is paying him to be on the podcasts or appear on TNTs.

It just seems like this is what he wants to do, and it's great he had the opportunity to do whatever he wants.

I don't know what he does it's not podcast day, though.
  • @Dylabaloo Oh, awesome clip.
  • @Dylabaloo:

Damn, that's a great clip. Grossmann is like the perfect villain.

I'm sure there are too many NDAs involved for him to talk about specifics.

I invest a lot of time in this website and don't get compensated for it.  Should I stop posting until I get paid?
  • @Helushune:

Wait, you don't get a post royalties check every month? I always assumed everybody else was getting them too.
  • @lane Will pays me to email him nice things to help keep morale up. It's working.
  • @Dylabaloo: dang!  kudos to Gary for that debate.  also, when is that?  like '96?

    E:  it's from '99.
  • I understand he, Will, and Norm go way back in the magazine days, and due to his status as a writer (whenever hours) and the fact that he lives close to the Whiskey office (he mentioned this at some point), he just comes around sometimes. I say it's great to have him.
  • @lane:
I think there was a snag when I requested to be paid in hugs.
