When playing videos (on this site) there is a choice between streaming and progressive. What is the difference?

I would guess by progressive, they are referring to a constant bit rate stream, that is progressively downloaded, as opposed to a more dynamic bit rate stream that is downloading as you play and is varying the video/audio bit rate in order to not have to stop and buffer, that's my guess anyway, just going by the names of the option.

@nexex:
From what I can tell, Progressive is the old whiskey system where your browser just downloads the whole video as fast as it can. Streaming on the other hand, downloads as you are going only providing a small buffer, this allows you to skip to any point in the video without downloading it first.

So if you are having problems with buffering just switch it to progressive and let it load for a couple of mins but otherwise pick streaming as it gives you a lot more flexibility.

There are probably other major differences to the systems but this is all that's noticeable on the user end at least.
