I've had my basic HTC incredible for 2 years, so my contract is coming up at the end of the month. I am reasonably happy with the phone, so I'm not itching to spend money on a new one. I was thinking about rooting my phone and putting cyanogenmod on it. As far as I can tell it might give me a bit of a performance boost, it would allow me to more permanently kill certain apps that always manage to turn them selves on, and it might cause a huge headache.
My question is whether or not it makes sense for me to try this out? I'm a pretty standard smartphone user. I'll use the apps, but not nearly as much as some people. I use about 0.5 Gigs of data a month. Maybe 150 texts. These may seem like odd metrics but I wanted to give people an idea of who I am as a user before they weigh in on whether or not installing cyanogen is a good idea. Thanks.
I'm running cyanogenmod 2.3.7 on my Motorola Defy. I'm really happy and you can experience the vanilla Android OS experience. It does not have a layer of crap running on top of it. I notice a better battery life and it is much more snappier when you are using the touch screen. You don't need to be a heavy smartphone user to have cyanogenmod. Its great for casual users too! But one thing is that after you installed cyanogenmod. You will have a lot more deeper options to tweak your phone. Just make a backup of your original HTC incredible rom so you can always go back if you want to.
As it was said above, make sure you make a backup of your current install.
Once that's done, jump in. You'll screw up. You'll think you've bricked it. You'll fix it. You'll tweak it. You'll make it slow. You'll make it fast. You'll make it your own.
I don't know if the procedure is the same as the Incredible 2, which is what I have, but nat3mil has some very good tutorials on his Youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/nat3mil, and he is very responsive and helpful on Twitter if you run into trouble.

Have fun :)
All I can say is research. Look up videos on YouTube and read forums.
All sound advice. Thanks gentlemen/ladies. I'll most likely be back here after I've bricked my phone.
I've had Cyanogenmod on my HTC Incredible for over a year now. Much better experience than the stock HTC firmware.

Cosigned. I tried out an ICS update from another mod, but cyanogen is the way to go.
Just put a jelly bean alpha on my Dinc so far so good, was using a cyanogenmod for last couple months and it worked pretty good
