Listen is being killed, good Android podcast apps?

  • Since Google is killing Google Listen, what are some (preferably free) Android podcast apps?

I've heard good things about some of the paid ones like Doggcatcher, but are there any good free ones?

  • I've been using BeyondPod for a good year or so now and like it a lot. I know some people really dislike it for its kind of weird redundancy in UI design (you'll see what I mean if you check it out), but whatever.

Oh, also, what's with Google killing Listen? I was actually gonna check it out one of these days.

Oh, and also also, I completely forgot BP was a paid app. It's only free for a week it turns out. My bad.

  • @PillClinton: I'm checking out BeyondPod, it looks good so far.

I don't get why they're killing Listen unless they integrate podcasts into Music, which would be nice I guess. It hasn't changed much (at all really) in the year I've been using it, and it's not a great interface, but it was decent enough.

  • I use Doggcatcher for my podcasts. I started using it quite a long time back after a recommendation from our very own Will Smith. It lets you automate the downloading and deleting of the various podcasts you follow, and the player remembers your place when you quit out early. I like that. I haven't really checked around to see what other apps are like now, so there is a good chance there is far better ones around now. For what it's worth I still think it's just fine. It's also a paid app.

  • Another vote for Doggcatcher. It's really good, and well worth the price of admission. I know everybody likes free software these days but Doggcatcher is hardly expensive, and when you consider how many hours use you will get out of it then having something which isnt a buggy piece of shit with a massive lack of features is definitely a good thing.

  • Pocket Casts all the way.

I moved on from Listen pretty fast, remember it being unstable and the search being pretty bad.

  • Does either Doggcatcher or Pocket Casts allow you to stream the podcast instead of download it like Beyond Pod?

  • @Skytylz: I haven't actually tried to do it myself, but I was sure that the feature is supposed to be in there.

In fact, it says streaming works in their FAQ right here: http://www.doggcatcher.com/faq#t86n853

  • Another vote for doggcatcher here.

@Skytylz: DC does have a stream feature and it works well but is dependent on your connection of course.

  • I've found that doggcatcher is taking forever to download anything these days. It literally usually takes 30+mins to download this is only a test when I can download it on my iPad or computer in about 30 seconds.

I don't know if it's doggcatcher or something weird in the wifi for Jelly Bean but I've been avoiding for a while now.

YEEEE, beyondpod is great and it does allow streaming and downloads @Skytylz: . my only wish is that i want to be able to put on files myself and have the beyondpod player play it. but i dont know how.

  • @super2j: Ha, yeah me too! The BP player's pretty fantastic, but I haven't been able to do it either.

Ok so check this out. After seeing your interest in it too, i decided to do something about it. And i found out its actually pretty easy to do it. http://beyondpod.com/support/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/16/2/how-can-i-play-local-media

If you have an updated beyond pod, just click "add feed" and scroll down to "import from sd card folder" and head to a folder u want.

  • I'm using doggcatcher and finding it good but I'd dump it in a heartbeat for a simple podcast app, one without search or categories or plenty of those extras most podcast apps have to clutter up the app. A podcast app that syncs feeds from a folder in google reader is the most I need on top of downloading and playing audio, an app like that seems to be quite hard to find.

  • @super2j: Ooh nice find. Gonna try that out.

  • Already been mentioned, but I'll put my +1 on Pocket Casts. Very clean layout and a lot of good features.

  • I really like beyondpod. I've been using it for about 3 months. Just got my Nexus 7 and I really love the tablet version as well.

  • So, I've been using Pocket Casts since shortly after posting this topic, and it's been really good. I like it a lot more than I liked Google Listen.

  • Podax.

  • I've used a ton of podcast apps on Android (I drive and listen to podcasts pretty much all day for work). I finally found my perfect one - Podkicker Pro. It's $3 (don't get the free one, it's not updated and much different) and worth every cent. Lots of flexibility (download/stream/caching/etc) and a killer "car-mode" interface. Can't recommend this enough

  • I was having numerous problems with Listen... Good to see Google was finally cutting that cord. That app wasn't living up to their authorship for quite some time. I also have been using BeyondPod and am very happy with the app and the widget.

  • I've been using dog catcher for awhile too mainly for the ability to add audio book .mp3 files and it keeps track of the position, couldn't find too many other audio managers that could.
