Desktops are the way to go, you can fit the most technology in them.

Excuse my ignorance but what's the difference between a notebook and a laptop?

Desktops are amazing.

Desktops all the way.

Laptop all the way.  They're plenty powerful and the convenience of using them anywhere trumps any advantage a desktop could possibly have for me.

Weird question I have to say. I depends on my needs. There is a specific need to all of those options.

I mainly use my Desktop simply because my laptop is now too out of date.

I like laptops and desktops. I use my Macbook Pro for school, and a gaming rig at home.
So have their advantages.

Probably a laptop, good balance of portability and power.

If I can only have one of the above, a laptop obviously.

If I can have some combination of the above, probably a desktop and an iPad.

For me, I actually have a desktop, laptop, and soon an iPad as well.  But I probably won't be getting a new laptop in the future, just keep updating my ipad and desktop.

I'm a big gamer, but I also travel fairly frequently for work, and I've always found it difficult to find a good blend of portability and power, even across multiple devices.  For the last 3 years I've been a desktop guy.  I tried to deal with the portability issue with a revolving door of notebooks; first a desktop replacement from work (too heavy), then my wife's Macbook Pro (too expensive), and most recently an ultralight CULV machine (too underpowered).  The other problem this presented was that of syncing my information between different machines, something I've never really found an acceptable solution to.

So now I'm ditching my desktop in favor of a new approach.  My primary machine is going to be a 17" desktop replacement, which I'll be getting in early June.  With a Radeon 5850m, I'm hoping it will be able to handle my gaming needs capably.  Due to the size and weight, it will mostly stay at home, but I'll still be able to take it with me when for extended travel.  For shorter trips, I'll be relying on my iPad.  It's far from a full featured PC, but it's light enough and the battery lasts long enough that I can comfortably take it with me just about anywhere I go, and it's more than enough to keep me occupied and connected on shorter trips.  The locked down nature of the device actually helps a little in that all the software is designed specifically for it, and I don't get into the situation I had with my ultralight where it's not powerful enough to run the things I really want to on it.

I pretty much use a laptop and nothing else for computing.   I'd love to have an ipad to surf the web while I watch tv via my laptop.

@ebritt:  I thought they were the same thing... Laptop was English and Notebook was American?

I guess if money were no object then I could go for the most expensive laptop on the planet and I'd be happy.
The problem is the laptop I would need, to be able to do the things that I do, is more than I am willing to spend.
