Talk me out of an X51

  • So, I'm going to say some dirty words here. You are hereby warned.

I'm going to buy an Alienware PC.

Yeah, yeah. I know. I'm awful and I'm not very smart. Maybe, but here's my reasoning and I'm hoping I haven't deluded myself.

I've built my own PC before but I don't have time to tinker anymore. I've primarily been a console gamer since the 360 hit and I'd like to jump back into PC gaming as I miss it. Some of my fondest gaming memories are playing Desert Combat and I'm just not going to get that from a console. I know the X51 isn't the greatest deal around but I'm willing to pay a small price premium to get the form factor. Having a pre-built rig with a warranty sounds pretty nice too.

The cliff notes specs for the box I want is a i7-3770 processor, 8GB ram, and the upgraded GTX 555. Paying Dell to swap in a new card hurts, but you need to do that to get the psu bumped up. The most sure way to allow upgrading headroom on this thing is to have the 330w vs 240w psu, so I need to bite that $100 bullet. All is not lost though, as there are $150 worth of coupons available, giving me a final price of an even $1000.

I know I could build a cheap rig for less but I don't want a big ass tower under my desk. Plain and simple. Thanks for any input and I'm already planning out the massacre to my wallet Steam will inflict.

  • Only thing I can say is concerning the size. It's a tiny form factor that's going to be a pain to upgrade (if you can). Keep in mind that you're basically paying $1,000 for a PC you can't tinker with. While some people find that as a boon, people who know what they're doing inside them are aggravated very quickly when they realize they can't do anything with it.

Computers are like dogs. If it's small, it's for women. Unless it's a corgi, those are the best.

Lesson: Buy a corgi instead. Corgis can play all the latest computer games.

  • Actually, you can upgrade them a little bit. The power supply is limited but a goofball over on gaf stuffed a 7870 in his. It fits in the case and it draws under 250w at full load. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=472732 A GTX 680 fits in the case but even the Kepler stuff is too power hungry at this point. I bet in a year there will be a card in that family that won't be. http://www.gamespot.com/features/the-alienware-x51-and-nvidia-gtx-680-a-match-made-in-heaven-6369912/
  • Hey, you know the drawbacks and the benefits, I say go for it if that's what you're set on.

PS - Long time no see, how've you been?

  • Withdrawing from IRC. :( I just redid my upstairs living area so my pc has been down too. I just got it back up yesterday and that crystallized my desire for a new box. Everyone still alive and kicking in #Tested? Tell everyone I said hey, or they're probably reading this. Hello guys!

Killing the forums at 110 percent!

  • er, $1000 and you're only getting a GT 555? Not too familiar with that chip but I don't expect much gaming wise out of it.

  • Might be able to recommend this to you? HDD aren't the best in it, but it does have 2 bays to put an SSD in it and use other as a back up drive. Also has 4 bays to upgrade RAM as well and video card is a setup up I believe in 555 to a 650 for mobile GFX. Only down fall to it it is it has a 1600x900 resolution if that matters, but you can hook up an external monitor for that to get a full 1920x1080 if you care about those kinda things.

  • Thanks, but a gaming laptop makes more compromises than the X51 and I'm not comfortable with that.
  • @CarRacer: We've actually moved from efnet to freenode, still #tested though.

  • No, I know. That's why I can't connect anymore. I use the Rooms app on iPhone and Freenode doesn't like that I use a cellular connection. It doesn't pass some authentication and it won't let me connect.
