Sound Card/New Headphones

  • Hey all,

I recently built a new rig (July of last year) and everything has been running great. I just ordered a new mouse and keyboard and I feel all that is left is a new headset. Right now I use a Microsoft Livechat headset and it has worked great for me. For $20 it is really good. Yet, I feel that I might as well upgrade and get some nice surround sound ones. The only problem is, I have no idea what to even look for when it comes to headphones and audio. I plan on using it for mostly games and music. Not only that, I don't have a sound card because my mother board has on board audio (Realtek ALC892 for audio, the whole motherboard is a ASUS P8Z68-V).

I am totally lost on what I need to get (if I even need to) and so any help/recommendations would be fantastic. Thanks in advance!

  • @HellBound: Surround sound headphones are real bad. Almost universally. I would totally avoid those like the plague (hell, I'd avoid headsets by the plague as well, and just go with separate headphones and a microphone) as you're going to get a lot better quality sound with a proper pair of headphones vs some weird ass multispeaker headphone setup.

Regardless of your choice, a sound card is not necessary.
