I'm impressed.... ;p I'm a first year engineering student who used to be a pipefitter in the oil sands industry. Enjoy the forums...though the makerbot 3d printing forum is kinda dead.
I learned from a buddy whose goal one weekend was to get it so I could weld together the sharp edges of two razor blades without blowing through or using too much fill, and then weld two soda cans together.
Razor blades ✔
Cans? :( Still can't manage that insanity experiment
I think if the cans were made of steel rather than alu it'd be possible...a machine could probably do it because it could be fast enough...a person? Probably not...Well, not a beginner anyways :p

And yeap, this guy can take two aluminum soda cans and weld the bottoms together. It's apparently a good exercise, but it's a lesson in hand control and knowing when your about to melt, especially with aluminum.
A second year med student who can mig/tig.
