How far off does everyone think Freethinking A.I is? Personally I don't know if I will see it in my lifetime but hopefully I will.

If the definition of AI is the traditional literary one of being an entity that you can have a conversation with and not know the difference then I think it's gonna happen sooner then we think. However I think we're a ways off from physical androids that we can't distinguish from humans.

Somewhat of a tangent but what's everyones favorite book on AI? I recently read Heinlein's The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress and while it certainly isn't hard sci-fi it was certainly extremely enjoyable.

@CableKid:

Let me ask you this:

You're in the desert. You see a tortoise lying on its back, struggling, and you're not helping. Why is that?

@snide:
I'm fairly certain it's a snack cake of some sort. I know, it doesn't make sense to me either.

Turtle aint it?

But there's already a lot of projects running and going in which synthetic entities end up learning processes as they go.
I consider that to be a small step (albeit critical) towards true AI. We'll get there soon enough, and then realize we've been surpassed on the food chain :-P

Alright alright it's okay we just need to find John Connor, or Neo, or Master Chief, or you know what any generic science fiction hero would suffice at this point.
