So im looking to connect my Acer Aspire 6920G to my Sony Home Theatre system. I have an SPDIF which has the red laser glow coming out of it and was wondering if anyone else has used Toslink adaptors to connect up their laptops to amps. Also does anyone know how to get Realtek drivers to output surround sound through 1 port, I can get it working with 3 which works with my PC speaker setup but only get Stereo though my one SPDIF port.
Are you just asking if anyone's ever used a Toslink cable to hook something up? Yes, I have. You plug one end in one device, and the other end in another device. It's not terribly difficult.
As for the surround issue, your receiver has to support Dolby decoding - your laptop will be sending out a raw signal, and it's up to the receiver to turn that signal into a 5.1 audio stream. If it can't or if it's not configured properly, it'll just convert the signal to stereo. Look at your receiver manual or poke through the menus and see if you can find an option to enable decoding on the SPDIF input.
