Recommendations for sound system for PC gaming?

  • Hello! A little while ago I built a sweet gaming rig, got a sweet gaming monitor, a sweet gaming keyboard and a sweet gaming mouse. There's just one thing missing! A sweet gaming sound system! My rubbish PC speakers are really letting the team down. Any recommendations for a sound system good for PC gaming? Is it worth setting up some 'surround sound' setup? Do games take advantage of that? I'm happy to spend up to and around the £100 mark.

  • I wouldn't go a surround setup for a PC. I'd look at a decent quality 2.0 system.

Check out the Microlab Solo6C speakers. They pack a decent amount of punch for a really cheap price. If you can't find them then have a look for the AudioEngine A2 speakers, if you can afford it the AudioEngine A5s are quite a bit better though.

  • How about the Harman Kardon Soundsticks?

  • They're probably discontinued by now, but a friend of mine has this set:

Every time I go to his place I'm surprised by how good they are for movies, games, and music. I would never produce music on them though because the subwoofer is fucking insane, but they're good for entertainment. See if you can find something similar to them or the newest generation of them :)

  • I have the M-Audio AV40 and they're pretty good in my opinion.

    They're currently $125 on Amazon.

Pardon, just realized you're from somewhere in the UK.

  • @mortface: Darn, should you have mentioned music anywhere in your post, I would have told you about the unofficial Tested speakers, which are the M-Audio AV40. But purely for gaming, they're too good, by that I mean, it would emphasis the fact that most games sound terrible.

But at least, I can tell you one thing: forget surround setup. One, because for it to sound decent, you HAVE to place them correctly (need space around you). Two, for that kind of price, you're going to get something terrible. You're much better off with a nice stereo setup (w/ or w/o sub). Games with plenty of explosions and firearms, helicopters flying around and stuff, I'd go for a sub, anything car related (bikes, boats, trucks... too), I would skip the sub.

  • @mortface: How do you feel about using some really nice headphones instead of speakers? I use a set of seinheiser HD-555, are surround-sound headphones. Super soft and comfortable.

  • My girlfriend likes to watch me play games, so I need speakers not headphones.
