Did Tested just fix internet ageism?

  • So I'm looking at his guy's profile to see how many posts he has, think of post count as a kind of age on the internet, and notice that I had to go all the way to their profile to find this simple number. No this is not a complaint about an insignificant number but I do wonder if taking that number away from easy sight was actually an excellent idea.

There are times when people use a person's post count to judge how long they've been on a site and use that as a barometer for how to treat them, this gets rid of that. Boom Tested just solved internet ageism!

Now clearly things like trolls might be an issue but in this time of new users this seems like a simple way to avoid new users being seen as any less relevant. I also know that the former Whiskey sites usually are very well behaved in comparison to other sites but it's just something interesting to mull over.

  • Uh.. I don't understand the point of your post. Either the title's misleading or you're missing the "Comments" counter under the user's image on the profile page.
  • You do realize that on the left there's still a bar of the Top Posters in each section of the forums?

WAAAH I HAVE 900+ COMMENTS SO MY OPINIONS MATTER MORE THAN YOURS.

Nah, I think Tested is better than that, counter or not.

  • @Toxeia: I think its more the fact that most forums are very table like where one column is the post the adjacent column is the user with that stats like join date, post count, country etc. We do not have that here so you can not so readily dismiss someone as a noob or ass kiss someone with high post count.

  • Mmm, I see I misread the OP. Sorry for that.
  • lol, get off my lawn! :P only joking!! Sure, they took away the counter, but they also made it retina-burning white which is helping to keep this not really old timer away :(.

  • The Tested forums are pretty minimalist if you haven't noticed. The evolution of web forums is interesting- they went from all-text to obtrusive, flashy and in-your-face and then back to streamlined. Not all have reached the final stage yet.

  • It pretty nice yeah. I do not remember any of the WM site ever having user stats at every post but i might very well be wrong. A lot of forums still have this and i hope that it will gradually go away.

It being in the profile is a o k, I actually would not mind if it only would be something that the moderation team could see but there is no real need to go that far.

We still have the "top users" for every forum but that is a lot less "intimidating" than seeing user stats at every post since it only are a handful of users that are up there. We also have the (naturally declining) premium member status which i think added quite a bit to internet ageism but i am not quite sure if there is any real alternative to that.

@ThePhantomStranger: Your avatar is now "vintage cool" ^^

  • @Rallier: Tested used to show your total post count next to your name on every comment, iirc

You gotta taylor the pitch for the audience, you aim for dumbs teenagers, you HAVe to have huge banners and asinine signature, and when you actually have a message to convey, then it stands on its own.

I really do enjoy the fact that there is only the avatar, name and date of post.
