It sounds a bit crazy but a compagny called ppl4wrld is having a kickstarter to fund their arduino based mini satellite (10cm cube) with backers being able to hire the satellite for their own experiments.
Starting 150 Dollars people will be able to use it to take 15 pictures. At the 300 dollar mark people will be able to have it transmit a message, Marriage proposal from space?
At 500 Dollars it starts getting interesting for researchers as they will be able to hire the satellite and all its sensors for a day (more sensors may be added at the end of the kickstarter campaign). Further "rewards" range from more time with it to co-sponsorships.
It is planned to be launched using one of the NASA or ESA ride-along programs. Although if they have a large number of backers they might opt for a commercial launch which looks like it might be the case.
The project to my understanding launched today and has a goal of 35k Dollars, it is already at 28k with 25 days to go. The money raised for the kickstarter is meant for the production of the sattilite and the software.
