i tend to have to drive in areas where the state troopers are aplenty.  While I don't speed too much sometimes it just happens.  I was thinking about getting one but I'm not sure which to go with.  I was looking at the Escort 9500 but it's 500 bucks.  I was thinking about the older 8500 x50 which is almost half the price.  So what do you guys use if you have one? I'm looking for suggestions.

I hate to be "that guy", but what about your build in speedometer?

IMO, they're not worth the money if you're not a speeder.  I'm not going to shell out the dough just on the off chance I might get pulled over.  Plus, if you do get pulled over and the cop sees it on your dashboard, I gotta think it just looks bad.  Do like I do and keep your cruise control set to 10 over the limit.  A cop has to be a real a-hole to ticket you for 10 over, and even if he does you can probably beat it in court.  I just got pulled over for 83 in a 65 and I beat it at traffic court lol.

i was talking to one of our engineers about this last week. he uses a radar detector, and says it's probably saved him $5000 in fines since he's had it. i'll ask to see what model he uses.

Sounds like your engineer friend has a lead foot, lol.

I've gotten so many speeding tickets I am way to scared to speed now. I don't even go 5 over anymore. Do yourself a favor, and don't speed, it will save you a lot of hassle down the road as well as money, and it will keep you and the people around you safer.

These kids by my apartment play around with a radar detector their dad bought at a police auction for old and outdated equipment. Man they are living the American dream...

When I used to drive I had a radar detector, but I've since sold it because I no longer drive.  It was worth every penny while I had it though.  Just be careful as they are illegal in some areas to use.

Awesome.  It's not so much I'm worried about getting the ticket and paying that.  That's not the big problem.  Since I'm deemed a "risk" under my insurance if I do get a ticket I will lose my discounts and my rates will go up.  I don't really need that.

I may be able to get the escort 8500 off my friend for 50 bucks if he decides to sell it.  I don't think I'd pass up that deal.

i've always wanted to get one, but scared that they aren't very effective?  How effective are they usually?

@Peacemaker: I dunno about your state, but in MA if you get ticketed but they dismiss it in court, it doesn't go against your insurance.  The rule of thumb is always fight your tickets.  Like I said, I just got out of a ticket for 83 in a 65.
