What do you do with old devices?

My iPod 30 gig 5th Gen (4 years old) and my Dell notebook (5 years) died within the span of a month of each other recently. So, I'm currently a bit concerned as to what's the "proper" way of disposing of these dead beasts. It seems unethical to just toss it into the garbage, and with the laptop, I feel tossing it with the hard drive inside is even more dangerous. So what have you done to dispose of electronics?

There should be an electronics recycling/disposal place in your area, so.. google it (or use whatever you need to find it). I can't really help too much since i'm from the UK but it helps to dispose of it properly as a lot of the raw materials can be reused.

also, Dell do a free recycling thingymajig.

@HypoXenophobia:

In the USA there are options to recycle old tech devices.

(1) Best Buy recycles a lot of things for free.  They do it for probably a tax-write-off and of course the money they get for the raw materials inside.  Ask beforehand, but this may be the most sensible option.

(2) You could chance it and sell the items as spare-parts on eBay.  Just have to clearly indicate that the items are broken and they are only good for spare parts at best.  But you have to deal with lazy buyers sometimes who don't know how to read and comprehend.   You could make a few extra bucks, then again you could get screwed by some lying, ignorant buyer.

(3)  Some communities have free recycling days for electronics.  Sadly, most do not.  For some reason, it costs people money to drop off old and broken electronics to be properly disposed of or sent away for recycling.  Hilarious when said companies are making a profit from items that people have to pay them to take.  I had a Compaq Presario 1245 I wanted to recycle (trying to be green and forward-thinking) and I ran into many roadblocks in giving it away to be properly recycled.   In my opinion, seeing how electronics are so ubiquitous now for everyone, it should mandatory that all recycling for it is free and readily available.

3 Step process:

1. Tie to tree
2. Shoot with shotgun
3. Walk away
