DISCLAIMER: This was initially posted over at Giant Bomb in the Off-Topic forum. After some discussion, it was thought that it would be of benefit posted over here as well.
 
I don't think I've seen something like this anywhere so far on GB/Tested. Well maybe some have appeared in response to various "How do I..?" questions. The source of this huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge list is from a forum post over at Screwattack.com (dated March 2008, in case you're curious as to why certain programs may or may not be here such as Google Chrome, but I'll attempt to put that in). I'm by no means a computer whiz, but I think it would be a terrible shame to deprive the rest of the Internet of this user's submission.
 
Oh and feel free to add any others if they don't appear on this list, some other users at GB already have ^_^ (I'll include them) I've also put certain well known/recommended links in bold for ease of use.

I personally use Avira Antivir Free, which is already on this list. You get popups asking to buy the pro version every 8 hours or so, but that's what keeps it free. 
Speaking of antivirus software , Microsoft Security Essentials was recently released as freeware to compete with the other free AV out there. Must have a genuine copy of Windows to run.  http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/
 
Total Commander is a great file manager (shareware). Before Vista SP1 came out, it was my go-to for not freezing my system for two hours waiting for a 2MB file to copy.  http://www.ghisler.com/

Under video codecs , you could do to add CCCP - the Combined Community Codec Pack. I've found it better than everything else up there.  http://www.cccp-project.net/
 
KGB is a powerful compression software . However, it has high hardware requirements. Using its proprietary format (KGB1 or KGB2) it can shrink stuff down to under 20% of the original file size. Have fun extracting for hours, though.  http://kgbarchiver.net/

If iTunes is one there, then Zune should be.  Also, Microsoft Security Essentials is a must-add for the Anti-Virus section.

Yawcam is pretty cool for webcam software too, I use it but it wasn't mentioned in the list.

Good list, but are there any free video editors out there?  I just tried to edit a video with the Windows Live Movie Maker that came with Windows 7, and it is the worst editor I have ever used, and is worse than the old Movie Maker program on older Windows.

The following message is from a user at Screwattack. I asked about cutting up a .mp4 video into smaller parts and what program to use (I eventually settled with Windows Live like you have - and yeah it's pretty basic, but I was essentially just splitting stuff up)

 While I constantly bash VLC for being a crappy, crappy player, both in Windows and Mac, it does have some handy encoding options. And it's free=P

File -> Streaming/Exporting Wizard -> Check Transcode/Save to file -> Next -> Browse for the video file -> Check "Enable " under "Partial Extract", then chose your time codes.

That is how you do it in the latest build for Mac. I'm sure it's very similar on Windows. However, if you're using an older VLC build, you'll have to input :s tart-time=## and :s top-time=### in the field for special rules. # obviously has to be replaced with a number. It uses seconds to measure, so  05:36 would be 336, not 5,36 or anything like that.

Kudos to the guys who put it together, but I can't help but feel it's somewhat useless without some type of context or editorial. Maybe cut it down and have only 2 or 3 per catagory? Like best free anti-virus and best paid anti-virus etc.
 
In its current form it'll probably just confuse the people who need it the most.

Netbeans needs to be added to the programming list.

@Zaph: I agree. The list is pretty old, but I'll attempt to cut it down at some point in the future. Problem is my knowledge with 95% of those programs is... poor. But Tested is meant to be a wiki site, right?
 
So, if you like, pick a couple of programs (you don't have to go through them all) that you recognize and recommend. Or even better, mention the ones that should have absolutely no mention on the list (if they're totally shit, for instance).

Google SketchUp is a pretty interesting 3d modeller     inkscape a vector image program
teracopy file copy utlity
xpadder is a good way to use a gamepad to do things
wamp is similar to xamp but I've found it works better on windows 
ziepod  is good for podcasts and video podcasts  
virtual box good virtual machine   
JDisk Report  is a nice util to find where you hdd space has all gone
IM Clients needs digsby and pidgin both very good multi IM clients  

Desktop enhancements needs: 
wallpaper master (wallpaper randomiser has hotkeys etc, there is a pro version that has a few extra features) 
taskbar shuffle (makes the xp taskbar able to have it's tasks grouped and dragged similar to win7)  
Switcher is a task switcher similar to macs one 
Vistaswitcher is a task switcher update for windows with a large preview pane 

also maybe you could add webapps =P like mibbit.com or meebo.com and google apps 
 
also also once the wiki is up these could be a good thing to have in it
