In case some of you haven't heard, starting June 7th AT&T will roll out new Data plans for new smartphone users:

DataPlus
$15 / month for 200 mb and an additional $15 for each 200 mb you go over.

DataPro
$25 / month for 2gb and $10 for each additional 1GB.

and then tethering for $20 more a month.

AT&T is saying that anyone who currently has a $30 unlimited data plan will be grandfathered in with it, but should they ever change from it, the option will be lost. Also, tethering will not be an option for unlimited users.

I realized after looking at my usage, that I usually don't break 1GB and that's with a phone that was downloading about 10 podcasts a day on 3g, so I don't think it will be a problem for me when I switch to the new iPhone when it's released, how about you guys?

Hrmmmm. Whats with the data change?  Why not stick to unlimited?  I mean I am no business person, but I don't understand why they would put limits on this now.  I think this might cost them to lose customers.  But like you said before you are downloading podcasts and barely use over a GB of data.  So who knows......

Obviously you haven't used AT&T's network.

I do think it's interesting that this change is scheduled to take effect the day the next iPhone is announced...

I think the timing makes perfect sense from their point of view. They're about to be hit with a major influx of iPhones again, some of which will be new, and with OS 4 supporting tethering, that's going to put some serious strain on their already over-burdened network. I'm not a fan of the limits, but I am not overly concerned about it, because just about everywhere I go has wi-fi nowadays, except in the car, and I'm not watching videos or emailing photos (the major users of data on the iPhone for me) while I'm driving.

Sadly enough I have AT&T.  I don't really use internet much on it since I don't have smartphone.  I mostly just use my phone for facebook or youtube.  I see the whole iPhone ploy now.... *shake fist*

My wife uses well over two gigs of data every month with her iPhone. I, for one, am very relieved to be grandfathered in.

I regularly break one gig (and on a couple occasions broke two gigs). My problem with this is that it was announced just before Netflix and Hulu were rumored to be coming, and now they are here. I'm still using an iPhone 3G but once I get an iPhone 4 I'll be streaming videos all the time over 3G. I'm grandfathered in. It's tempting to get tethering but I honestly don't think I'll use it often.
