So watching The Amazing Test and hearing of Gary's recent Lego builds has convinced me that at the ripe young age of 20 it's more than an acceptable age to buy a new Lego set. Over the last year I have been building the Halo mega blocks series and plan to build a diorama once I get a few more but it's been a long time since I built an actual Lego set so I decided to splash out one one. I went for the recently released Batman Funhouse (picture below) which is currently sold out but will get here in a few weeks or so. I was looking into the Batcave but seemed a little pricey and didn't seem to be much bigger than this one. I was also interested in Darth Mauls Infiltrator (whilst we can all agree that the film is junk Maul is possibly the best villain in the saga) but was also a little above what I was willing to pay for what is essentially a toy.
I'm also looking forward to the Lord of the Rings Lego sets coming 'this summer'. If they release a Balins Tomb set I will be over the moon and depending on how much it is might have to pick up a Helms Deep one if them make it (which they kind of have to right?)
Has anyone else been inspired to pick up some Lego or am I the only one out there?
P.S. If Will or Norm read this keep up the work on The Amazing Test. So far it's been really great to watch :)
@Leviticus128: I have ~five of those filled with legos in the top shelf of my closet, along with several unopened space themed lego sets and a pirate ship, all from when I was about 8-10
It's not quite as crazy as my friend who has almost 400lb of K'Nex.
I have a bunch of lego at my parents as well - not as much as @nickb64 - still, several-thousand pieces I'd guess. Still I went out and spent $40 on a little Creator set when the Endurance Run first started.
If I had somewhere to put it, I'd get the Super Star Destroyer. Even now I'm thinking if I mount my TV to the wall, I could put it where my TV is now, hmmm....
I am inspired to build some Lego. I would have to build the x-wing. I have to wait till the end of the month before I do anything.
Loving The Amazing Test so far.
Not only did I finally end up subscribing, but have added about 5 Star Wars Lego sets to my Amazon wish list. Tempted to dismantle my walking AT-AT and rebuild it again.
If I had the money and wasn't saving for a car, I would currently be building a Super Star Destroyer. As it stands, I'm repeatedly disassembling one of those kits that can be built into a load of different things.
After I saw the first episode I decided to order an X-Wing from Amazon. When I finished building it I was pretty much hooked. I just wanted to build more. Then I saw all the twitter posts from Norm and Gary about the Lego store in San Mateo and it really made me want to go. I went all the way down there (from SF) to check it out and it was really fun to see all the Lego stuff. Of course I couldn't resist and bought a TIE fighter to go with my X-Wing. I kind of wish I got more but I think I'm alright for now. Some day I want to get a large set because building is like 90% of the fun for me.
I actually don't mind accumulating Lego sets because they are fun to put together and display. I just can't believe I went all the way down to San Mateo for this shit.
Any good recommendations for sets with good building potential? I much more interested in the building half than the having a display piece after I feel, and whilst I'm tempted by the awesome Star Wars designs, the piece to cost ratio is way out. Anyone got any good recommendations for cheaper sets that will take a while to build? I'd love to get an 1000 piece set but all the newest season sets (2011-12) seem to clock in over £100 for Star Wars and around £80 for general sets which is a bit much for me. Anyone know any cheaper sets?
EDIT: Just found these which are exactly what I'm looking for (except not cheaper):
We got the Space Shuttle (#10231) kit and the Queen Anne's Revenge (#4195) sets... we were going to build them at opposite ends of the table until I had to unpack 6 of my 8 bags for the first 10 steps - The QAR set is sorted in numbered bags. The big problem is the I can't sort onto the table or the cats will walk off with the smaller pieces (or chase them under the furniture)... so we sorted the different colored bits into ziplock sandwich bags and both hunt up the pieces for me to assemble. When that's done I'll "help" her by opening the numbered bags and handing her the easily found pieces... but it's still fun. :-)
Trying to hold out for The Lord of the Rings sets but everytime I go to a store with a toy area I mosey over to the Lego area and contemplate getting a Creator set.

Sadly getting a set with a lot of pieces sends the price skyrocketing, Lego Creator brand is your best bet. Even then the only way to get it remotely cheap is to buy it used, but used Lego never sits right with me. I feel it needs to be fresh and snazzy for a brand new build...thats not just me right?
I just ordered the current Millenium Falcon set. It isn't the UCS one but it has a nice interior. These videos have really made me yearn to build a Lego space ship.
I have a ton of Star Wars Lego from when I was a kid. I had a TIE Fighter, and AT-ST and a few other things. I also had the full Harry Potter castle. I'm trying to find the TIE and rebuild it during February break.
Edit: I just found all 4 Rubbermaid tubs of it. 11 year old me is awesome! He organized it by set so all of the Star Wars stuff is by itself, which makes rebuilding it way easier. It all now depends if I still have the instructions or if I can find it. The sets are all from 2000-2002 so I doubt there's PDFs of the manuals.
It's been years since I built one, but I had a lot of fun with it despite knowing nothing about the actual show it's based on; and amazingly it's less expensive than the lego somehow.
I did not buy Lego because of this but I have to share this story. Last year I got married and my wife to be informed
Me its tradition to get each other a present for the morning of the wedding of course I got her some jewelry and expected something like cuff links but to my suprise when I awoke she had got me a massive Lego pirate ship. If I had any hesitation about getting married before this it was all gone with this awesome present. Also it was amazing how building that calmed the nerves in the hours leading up to the wedding that day.
@JCHenderson, your wife is obviously quite a find, lucky guy! lol I am wanting to get the Lego X-Wing I think, looks pretty cool but think I am going to have to wait a few months until after my holidays...

Duuuude, those are pretty awesome! What material are they?
They are mostly hard plastic, but they do contain metal/rubber/etc. for the joints in the interior skeleton.
Pretty much the same as a model kit you'd find in Toys R Us, but the quality of the parts is a lot better and it's a much more complicated build, master grade kits are 4-5 hours and the perfect grade kits are more like a weekend project.

I haven't bought anything but I was inspired to dig out my boxes and build a series of Dresden Files minifigs and buildings.
I was tempted to look at some Lego kits at the local shopping center, but I figured I'd rather go back to Gunpla instead.

It made me want to hit the Lego store downtown a couple of times. I'm going to get some of those NY Legos, start off easy.
If I had somewhere to put it, I'd get the Super Star Destroyer. Even now I'm thinking if I mount my TV to the wall, I could put it where my TV is now, hmmm....
I want to SO BAD. Sadly I lack the funds required to make Lego purchases. :(
I did :( ...I didn't open the box just yet waiting to get some time off of work so i can build it all at once.

Here's my bins of legos.

I got this today:
I did 20 pages and wish I could skip work tomorrow and just keep building...
I just caved in and bought the grand emporium. Please tell me I'm still sane.
@edwardt: So jealous.

Thanks for the tip, might get this!

Nope. The Falling Water Lego kit has been on my Amazon wish list since March 2011.
I've been to the lego site 3 times since this feature started, the price of kits keeps putting me off though.
I'm starting to think about building another one of these instead: http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN71870
