Due to my love for Q3A and the recent talk of the game both at Giant Bomb and Tested, I have once again leased a game server in hopes of playing with members of the community. Yes, the game is 12 years old. Yes, there is the free to play Quake Live. But any Quake III purists out there will understand. Some of us don't like the subtle changes made to the game in Quake Live, and we also prefer to have an administered playing environment via a proper dedicated server. So, if any of you are fans of playing deathmatch the way was meant to be, here is the relevant info.
EDIT- Many folks, including myself, have performance issues with the Steam version of Quake 3 Arena. If you have these issues, (low framerate, stuttering or hitching, or a general feeling of delay in weapon firing), you can run your Steam acquired Q3A outside of Steam which eliminates the problem(s). A simple 2 minute installation of ioquake3 and a quick file copy/paste is all it takes. Here are the IOQUAKE3 FILES, or you can visit the files link above. Instructions are in the zip for Windows users and in the .dmg for Mac folks.
@nihilisticmonkey: Let's just hope it all goes smoothly. TNT has had some bad luck a couple times, such as server host provider going down right as TF2 started! I think we're good to go though. You playing?
are there any instructions available for installing quake III on a mac?
As far as I know, you just download the Mac binaries from the ioquake3 site and copy over the pak files from your Quake 3 install. Somebody else around here could probably go into more detail on it, though.

RAY16 is correct. Download the Mac binaries, and copy the file "pak0.pk3" from any CD version of Quake III Arena or the Steam version. "pak0.pk3" belongs in the "baseq3" folder.
For those of you using the ioquake3 version of the game, which I recommend everyone should do, we now have fast map downloading enabled on the game server via download redirecting. If you do not use ioquake3, fast map downloading is not supported so you still need to manually download and copy the map pack into your baseq3 folder if you want to play when the server is running the Dreamcast maps (see original post for maps and ioquake3 links).
i guess im like a moron or something because i cant connect to the server, first it tells me about some update being outdated, then says, this server is those with low pings, and doesnt connect? what am i doing wrong

Assuming you have your Quake 3 patched to version 1.32c, it was probably nothing you were doing wrong. The server was running Rocket Arena from Yesterday through tonight. It is now back to normal Quake 3. The message you got about low pings commonly pops up after a failed connect attempt. It happens because your game is retrying the connection and interferes with your ping while doing so. You can safely ignore that warning. The server only runs Rocket Arena occasionally, so you shouldn't have that problem repeatedly. You can also see what the server is doing by going to the stats link in the original post and clicking on the server name at the top of the stats page, or join the Steam group, where we announce every time that Rocket Arena is in play.
@Snoman: hmm taht might have been it, but i could have sworn i installed rocket arena, maybe i ballsed up the download on that. im kind of a noob to quake, but i think i learn quickly
@coopdegra: I still doubt you did anything wrong there. Even if you do have Rocket Arena installed, Quake3 won't automatically switch over to it. You have to launch Rocket Arena using its shortcut, or you can load it up in the Quake3 menu under "mods". Just trying to connect to a Rocket Arena server using Quake 3 will not automatically launch the mod. Don't sweat, we'll get you up and running. There will be a few of us playing Saturday around 1PM EDT (5PM UTC). Maybe I'll see you there. Shoot me a message if you need some help still, or if what I said doesn't quite make sense. You can also hit me up on Twitter if you like at @JL_Frost. I get those messages instantly as opposed to the slower email notices from this forum.
After much tinkering and testing with the Freeze Tag and OSP mods, we have decided to opt for CPMA, or Challenge Pro Mode Arena, as the full time setup on the server. With CPMA in place, the server can be switched to Freeze Tag(FTAG), Instagib DM(IFFA), Clan Arena(CA), and Deathmatch(FFA), through player voting. This allows us to run normal deathmatch as our default game, but when enough players are in the mood for a different game type, they can simply call a vote. To start a vote, open the console and type "/callvote mode FTAG". This example would start a freeze tag vote. Replace "FTAG" in the command to vote for other modes-i.e. FFA, IFFA, CA. You will of course need CPMA installed in your Quake3 game. If you use ioquake3, you can simply connect to the server for auto-install. If you do not use ioquake3, you can download CPMA at http://promode.org under Current Releases. Grab CPMA 1.48 and the map collection directly below it. Extract CPMA 148 to your Quake 3 folder, and then put the maps in the cpma folder.
@RAY16: Hey Ray. It is easily switched between BaseQ3, Rocket Arena, CPMA, and Urban Terror. It's been running Urban Terror for 10 days because a small group of regulars have been playing it some. We sometimes switch games 2 or 3 times during a play session. If you would like, I can set you up with access to the control panel so you can switch the game type whenever you choose, and you can also schedule games here and in the Steam group if you want. Send me a message if you are interested in using the control panel.

@Fripplebubby:
That's some pretty low standard your rolling there.
Yep, was fun.
Congrats on getting your server used on TNT!
