Terraria

  • So, Terraria is out on Steam now. It is sort of a mix of Metroid, Castlevania and Minecraft. From the little time I have spent with it it seems very cool. Anyone else playing this game? Any chance of a Tested server beeing set up?
  • I've never even heard of it before :P
  • I've been playing since this morning. I really enjoy it although I have only scratched the surface of everything in this game so far.
  • It seems awesome. I love games where you basically find loot and keep upgrading yourself. I think this game does that quite a bit. I've only played a short time, but I watched a lot of vids ahead of time, so I think I have a good enough understanding of the game that I bought it.
  • I haven't played it, but from the video on Steam it seemed like 2D Minecraft, more or less. Can anyone who's played it confirm/deny?
  • @Mirado: Tested tweeted that it was in fact a crash prone 2D minecraft clone :)
  • @Mirado: It may look like a clone of Minecraft at first glance, but it is not so much about building huge buildings. Terraria has more items to find, NPC's to attract to your house/town, more enemies and bosses to kill.
When you explore you find items that upgrade your health and mana.
Here is some let's plays you can watch if you are curious:
  • @Scooopex: I watched around 20 or so of those videos (mainly on the creators' channel) and my take away is 2D Minecraft with more stuff (which is a double edged sword). The NPC dynamic is interesting, I like the variety of enemies, and there certainly seems to be enough content to keep you going, but I can't help but feel that they've tried to put too many things to collect or make into the game. By adding so many different items that perform the same function (shurikens and arrows as an example) coupled with the multitude of item levels, you sort of devalue each one.

It's also much more exploration focused vs the building focus of Minecraft, but it suffers from the same lack of a reason to explore without the building to prop it up. You explore caves to get items to make better items to explore caves to....each video was more or less the same cycle. In Minecraft's case you then pour your resources into crazy structures (and once you have a good amount you can more or less stop exploring and switch to strip mining if you aren't a fan) which is a nice payoff, whereas this game seems to lack a solid end goal. Sure you can fight some pretty nice bosses (and there is a pretty cool corruption mechanic although if you want to get technical it's just another biome that happens to spread) but in the end that just leads to more items to fight more bosses. Without the crazy mechanisms (which are impossible to make in 2D) or some sort of narrative to tie it together, I'm just not feeling it.

Of course, this is just the opinion of a person who hasn't played the game, and it may be a great game that just isn't for me. Without a demo to check out I'm stuck watching videos as well, which means I may be missing something. Seeing as you have it, I'm hoping you can tell me if I'm selling it short or not.
  • @Mirado: I guess we all cant like the same things;) I have barely begun playing the game, since I am waiting for a friend of mine to play with me. We want to discover all the stuff together. Hopefully the multiplayer will work OK without too much hassle.
Also, the creator said that they released the game a little early so some things might not be 100%. And they will keep updating the game with more content.
  • I will play some of this tonight. It looks interesting and fun.
  • If anyone sets up some multiplayer... I'd be down.
  • I hated Minecraft, but there`s something about this that looks really appealing to me, so I may be interested in picking this up, especially at the cost.  Seems to just have a bit more "game" to it than a giant sandbox.  Plus I actually really like the 2D style.

Only the first couple of minutes feel uncannily like Minecraft. Once you start fighting and exploring, the game takes on an almost Metroid-meets-Diablo kind of feel.
  • @extremeradical: Cool, metroid meets diablo sounds amazing, I'll be picking it up next time I am in gaming mode (aka, rebooted into windows)
  • I spent about 9 hours with Terraria between Friday and today. Lets just start by saying that its a FANTASTIC game.  The similarities to Minecraft are really only a vessel to a much more goal-oriented game..  Its more obtaining loot, and making your dude stronger than finding materials to build cool stuff with.   There are ever-stronger enemies to deal with and even bosses that can be summoned that drop epic loot.. If you have $10 and are looking for a really fun and engrossing game I wholeheartedly recommend Terraria.

  • i have an old computer kicking around, if i buy the game this weekend, ill definitely try to set a server up. The game doesn't seem to graphically intense so it should be able to run it.

  • Its pretty cool, the only problem is you can run out of content really fast. It took me and my buddies about 2 days to do almost everything from the game perspective. That wasn't a bad thing though, it was a super fun 2 days and it was only 10 bucks so value earned. It is a lot more goal oriented than minecraft is, It's impossible not to note the similarities (bordering on some stuff being ripped off of minecraft), but the game part of it is very different.

Unfortunately, I don't think the building elements are as fun as minecraft is so after you run out of that stuff I don't think there's as much of a draw to go back and sand box it up.

I can't wait till they add more stuff though. Hopefully in a few months I can restart a character and have some fun adventure all over again. If someone tosses up a tested server ill probably pop in.

  • I am seriously tempted to pick this up after seeing wills quick look. perhaps I can get my brother to play with me.

  • Game is pure crack. I wonder how the MP is on it....
