I was always under the impression that flavored coffee is just a way to sell cheap and crappy tasting beans. Instead of buying High end beans that carry their own natural flavors. But i know when ever I've had flavored coffees at my parents house there was always like a gross powder in the bottom of the cup and like you said became super concentrated as you get close to the bottom.
