As the topic suggests I though I would beseech my fellow here at tested to give me some golden advice. I'm planning on doing the interail this summer with by cousin with the aim to get to turkey and back. Essentially I was looking for a camcorder which would be small and preferably shoot in HD to capture my travels around Europe. Being a poor student I was hoping for something around the £200 mark something I can hang onto as we have not had a camcorder in my family for about 10 years now. And looking at some of the old VHS's we have from when me any siblings were quite small I feel its about time we had one again.
I was initially interested in the GO PRO but the lack of viewfinder is one hell of a deal breaker. I'm looking for value for money as I will probably keep this when I go to university.
GoPro might not be a bad idea in that price range. Lack of a viewfinder isn't that bad when you've got a full 180 degree field of view, just make sure you're pointed in the general direction and you'll get the shot every time. In terms of what you get for the money the GoPro is pretty good, you get a super wide angle fisheye lens, crop modes that let you go up to 120fps for slow motion, and stills at a decent resolution.
Would this be a camera one could use for family thing like birthdays, weddings and say looking and touristy places in europe though? I've been trying to find on youtube videos where people have used the go pro for things like this and all I get are the POV action stuff which i'll not be doing much of. I want something that can capture the beauty of venice or do a close up on painting. Would the GoPro Hero HD cover this do you reckon?
Thank you for your reply Arkasai. I wondering if I could send a question into the podcast but I know will hates "What do you think I should buy Questions".
Not all camcorders are created equal.
We did video of 2 golf tournaments with 2 different camcorders. The 320 video clips get played back using my custom software.
My Old Hitachi 350a does a better job than the
Sony XR200v HD.
The sony video will hang at unusual spots in the playback. But never the Hitachi video clips. Sometimes the Sony clip plays jerky jerk. But never the Hitachi.
Not to mention the 16X9 aspect ration vs the 4X3 of the Hitachi. Why did they change the ratio. Not for our good that's for sure.
The "golf" catalog option creates a timeline playback control file where the video starts at the last 6 seconds of video and at 3 seconds left (the swing) it switches to slo-mo. Then that segment plays again. Then the complete clip plays at normal speed. Then the next random swing.

This is a true comparison of Camcorders anything else doesn't count.

There is a lot more to say about camcorders. I have over 1800 videos on YouTube. My take on video is Break every rule you can. Those you can't break Keep.
The most important feature (besides a MultiMedia Player) is the remote. It eliminates the jigglies at the beginning and end of each clip, caused by hitting the on / off button. The remote should be on each and every CC because it is cheap. I could go on and on and probably will.
View screen doesn't matter an iota. Maybe even less than an iota.

The best camcorder is the one you take with you. Otherwise you get no good shots. Too expensive and you won't risk taking it along.
Go shoot lots and lots of video.
300 hrs will fit on a terabyte drive. So much unused disk space. What a waste.
If you really want to compare video from 2 camcorders. My software can play both at the same time. Viewing them side by each; it's easy to see which is best.
