ARES III Mission Patches - The Martian

Created by 1stage on Sept. 5, 2015, 5:29 p.m.
  • For those who are interested in an embroidered NASA-styled mission patch for the ARES III mission, inspired by the designs featured in the upcoming move The Martian, starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott, they are available at this eBay auction:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/221872093963

The patches are sew-on, for greater flexibility in attaching them the way you want. $10, postage included.

    Cheers!

  • Someone on Etsy has made vinyl decal versions as well, if anyone's interested - https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/238250258/the-martian-nasa-ares-iii-patch-vinyl?ref=favs_view_15

  • Those Etsy ones look awesome. They will look great on a cosplay spacesuit from The Martian!

  • Much better, more accurate ones are over on the RPF. http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=240861

  • Thank you!

  • @1stage: But seriously was this what they went for in the movie? If so someone got some 'splainin' to do!

  • @KylevT: No, of course not. Looks like most of what's used in the movie is either dye-sub printed or done on a REALLY detailed embroidery machine, and then there are the vinyl stickers on the space suits themselves. These are more like something you'd put on a backpack for fun, which works for some people.

  • Oh no the patch looks awesome, I'm just a lil bummed the graphics department of the movie didn't design something new.

NASA and other space mission patches have always been so graphic/creative/fun and in the cases of NRO patches cryptic and scary.

The design they used here is just a recycling if the old 1959 NASA seal.

  • I actually really like the design of the patches that they chose. The seal is still used by NASA for more formal occasions. And this patch takes the feel of this and translates it to a new planet. I feel it is a tribute to where we started and how far we have come since then.

In the sense of the movie to go from the first flight, to a man on the moon in under 70 years, and then all the way to Mars in less than 70 more years is amazing. And harping back to the seal is a way to pay tribute to all of the people in between.

Now, is that definitely why they chose it? I don't know, but it feels like a reasonable reason to have done so, and that is the feeling I get from it.

  • Below are my designs for mission patches for the two other missions from The Martian. They're being embroidered as we speak and should be available in a week or so...

    [Hmmm, having problems posting pictures...]

  • My first run of ARES III patches is sold out. I have another batch on the way, and I'll be bundling the two above patches as a three patch kit. I've also reworked the patch to have a bit more depth to the two planetary bodies.
  • I went to see the movie last night and was given a small Ares III mission patch which is pretty neat!

  • @YoThatLimp I don't know which is cooler... the patch, or the fact that you had Blue Moon and popcorn at a screening of The Martian.

    That's a 22oz bear as well!

  • @YoThatLimp: damn you auto-correct.

  • @1stage:please throw a post up when you are ready to sell again. I have been eyeing these for a while and want to get on with the program as soon as they come back in stock.

  • Will do. The new ones should be in tomorrow.

  • Updated to add shading to the two celestial bodies, thicker lettering, and stars as the separator of names.

    New auction site for these...
