How do YOU keep track of your place?

What do you use to keep your place in books? I've seen a few different methods that people use to keep track in books. Some people can just remember their place, some people use bookmarks, and I've seen a few people keep track of their reading progress by writing down the page numbers just inside of the cover of the book.

Personally, I dog-ear the pages as I go. How do you manage?

I use whatever scrap pieces of paper I can find around as a bookmark. If there isn't a piece of paper around I improvise with other stuff until I can find one.

whatever pages has not been read, the book will usually just flop open to last read page. Only works on new books.

I just guess. Although using a bookmark seems handy, I tend to lose them. Sometimes I'll just leave it open on my desk open upside down.

I make an "origami" bookmark.

I kind of have an OCD thing and I have to read to the end of a chapter.  I probably could remember where I left off but it's easier to open right up to it.

@Peacemaker: Thanks for the bookmark link. I'm going to make some of these now! Just need to find some pretty paper.

I am the same way, and yet even though I remember the chapter I still add a bookmark to it so I can open book right there (rather than having to flip through to it).

Lately?  I use a kindle or other electronic reading device, so it does it for me.

I used to just remember my page, and always always tried to end on the start of a new chapter (if it is a novely).  If it's academic reading, I probably have dozens of little stickie flags sticking out of it.

I always use bookmarks.   I tried dog-earring the pages once or twice, but I felt I was doing a disservice to my personal library.  Besides bookmarks are friggin' cool to collect and use.

I have many varied bookmarks I have bought and collected from bookstores in the past decade.
Let's see, the ones I remember off the top of my head are:

  • Homer Simpson
  • Elvis in gold suit
  • Eiffel Tower
  • Lord Of The Rings with the Balrog on it
  • Persian Carpet ones (4 of them in various textures and color)
  • 2 metal ones with cool quotes on them
  • a sexy 1950s pulp book cover one
  • The Wicked Witch of the Wizard Of Oz movie
  • One of Ernest Hemingway
  • One of Edgar Allan Poe\
  • A holographic one showing a skeleton getting out of a coffin
  • A gold medal one of The Buddha meditating

I can't think of the rest.  A few more.

I either wait till the end of a chapter or fold the corners down.

@MAGZine:
I use a tiny shred of folded up notebook paper I tore off some five years ago.

Elastic band or a scrap bit of paper.

Not a fan of bending my books pages, definitely would never write in them..

I put in a Kleenex or napkin or something. Since I do a lot of reading on the back porch and have insane allergies.

If not that, then I'll put in a scrap piece of paper. When I was a kid, though, I used to mark my page with a 5 dollar bill. No one ever knew where I hid my money.

When I slide the little switch at the top to turn it off, it remembers my place.

Why would you need a scrap of paper with a Kindle anyway? Ridiculous.

@Fripplebubby: Not sure, but I'd definitely recommend that you dogear the top corner of it.

I hate dog-eared pages so i use a bookmark that someone made for me.
