The device looks so good, but I'm wary of no open format support.

The screen looks so good, I can see reading from this.

Never had any interest in an ebook reader till the Kindle 3. Personally I'm glad to chop 40 off the price for just wifi. I spend 90% of my day in places with wifi and books aren't exactly something I'd need to get all that often.

No epub support sounds a little suspect to me still. You never saw Apple lock out mp3s on ipods and they managed to create the number one mp3 player. I think the lockout of epub is a sign that they don't think their prices are good enough on the books yet. More 4.99 books and a standard of 9.99 for everything else would be awesome but doubtful.

@Treythalomew: Well, the difference here is that there isn't really a widely used open eBook format. MP3 was wildly popular by the time the iPod came around. ePub should be that ubiquitous format, but there really aren't that many people using it, especially without putting their own layer of DRM on top. It's really chicken or egg problem--because MP3s worked great on PCs, people ripped their discs, and were familiar with the format. However, eBooks aren't great on PCs, so very few people use them on their PCs and no one is familiar with the format, as a result.

I really should've put my preorder in earlier.  Oh well, I'll be looking forward to hear what you guys have to say about it.

Sweet dramatic recreation.

How's the screen in terms of scratch resistence? Do you need a cover or case? Can I forgo all the extras and just throw it in my backpack and not worry about it?

Stop making me want to buy an e-book reader, I don't need one yet!  Also I have the urge to buy more pro shirts from online retailers for some reason.

You two make expensive gadgets the sweetest temptations.

Wasn't there talk of a $99 Kindle? I thought I heard that on the podcast a couple weeks ago?

I had preordered the 3G version about 3 weeks ago now, still waiting for a shipping notification :(  New iphone arrived today though so that's something :)

Looking forward to the full review.

@will: The dramatic representation was hilarious :)

Hhhmmm. Maybe I will ask for it for Christmas. Heard this in the background of the GB mailbag video too, haha. Bet it gets pretty noisy when everyone is filming at once.
TrueEnglishGenton Aug. 30, 2010 at 1:13 a.m.
Still thinking about getting one of these, just not totally sure at this point.
crusader8463on Aug. 30, 2010 at 2:10 a.m.
Still too expensive for me. Waiting for that magical $25-$50 price point. I just don't read enough to justify spending $150 on one of those things when I have so much other stuff I would need to use that $150 to buy.

Still, impressive technology on display there. Would love to get one for a gift, or  have a certain site hold a contest and rig it so that I win and mail it to me so that I could get it for my birthday on September 21st! Wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more say no more?

Ordered one of these on the 19th August so hopefully will get it before you do your review...

Also I demand that you take one apart!

Best opening to a video ever.
sketchon Aug. 30, 2010 at 4:49 a.m.

I've got one on preorder, looking forward to it coming.

I said a few months ago that I would buy a kindle if it came out on the native UK store, and was less than £120 i would get one. Amazon got me on both counts

Great video!

Will's shirt makes me sad.

Thanks for another hilarious and informative video! I've been wondering how these would be for folks I know who read a lot of books, but I think it has the same problem as games in digital download format right now; it's fine if you're the kind of person who buys everything new and never wants to exchange anything for new stuff, but there are plenty of people I know who only buy used books.

There's also the issue of commitment to the platform whenever you buy.
