Shutting down the streets of New York City to film a big action spectacular can cost so much money that no studio could ever recoup it. That’s why a popular choice is to head west a few hours to the Rock and Roll Capitol Of The World, Cleveland, Ohio. The city’s historical buildings make a fine stand-in for parts of New York City, and the battle scenes in The Avengers used them as a backdrop. The Sandman chase scene in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 was shot in Cleveland for similar reasons. Ironically, one of the most famous movies about Cleveland, baseball comedy Major League, was actually shot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
