HAL 9000 Replica

By Norman Chan

I can sell that to you, Dave.

Thinkgeek is now selling a screen-accurate life-size replica of the Hall 9000 wall panel from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The $500 prop replica is apparently based on 1967 studio blueprints, though it doesn't do much more than chime back 15 pre-recorded soundbites from the movie. This would be much cooler if it could be connected to home automation systems, or even a Nest-like thermostat. One interesting tidbit I didn't know: the original HAL iris was based on a Nikon Nikkor 8mm F/8 fisheye lens made in 1965, which lens collectors can find on eBay for around $600.
