TED Talk: Pixar's Ricky Nierva on Blank Sheets
For his TEDxAthens talk, Pixar artist and production designer Ricky Nierva explains why it's important not to be afraid of blank sheets--the artist's equivalent of writers block. The creative process has to begin somewhere, oftentimes with the most basic of shapes and ideas. (For the character of Carl Fredricksen, the genesis of his character was just a square.) It's only through iteration on those rough starts and scribbles--like drawing the way a child draws--that your ideas can surface. Our embrace of failure as part of making echos one of Pixar's mantras: fail quickly, fail often.
